Geocache Description:

Welcome to earthquake central Australia.

When compared to the Australian continent as a whole, the Flinders Ranges in South Australia has experienced largest concentration of seismic activity over the past 150 years.

This Earthcache is situated in Hawker. The magnificent views surrounding the town always tell me I have returned to some of the most truly awesome geological scenery, the ancient Flinders Ranges, one of the worlds’ great desert mountain ranges.

The Flinders Ranges are mountains largely without vegetation, remnants of some of the oldest mountains on the planet. You see the bones of the mountains on display. In breathtaking ochre and red colours.

Within the building adjacent is a seismograph recording local activity. The machine results has identified that this area is the most seismic active region in Australia. The seismograph presented is a remote analog recorder for the actual seismograph at -31.7642 138.5524

To show you have visited this earthcache location you will need to email the time base used on the front of the recorder and the current correction for local time. Your log should also include a picture of yourself in front of the machine.

Take you time to enjoy the display of photographs fossils and mineral samples on display. Check out the seismic charts for 26/12/2004. The big wave. Over 250,000 people died during that event.

Next get outback and experience the real thing.

Seismograph is a remote analogue unit with the seismometer approximately 20 Kms away. The two units are connected via a radio link. The paper on the drum is changed every 24 hours
