Geocache Description:

Located near the summit of Mt Somers, a long extinct volcano. There is no track marked track to this cache although the is two commonly used routes, one from Shaplin Falls and the other from Woolshed Creek.

There area around Mount Somers has many walking tracks varying from short walks to the 17km Sub alpine walkway. The walkway is serviced by two modern huts and is a comfortable two day tramp. If you are feeling more energetic the entire sub alpine walkway can be acheived in a day. Whilst tramping in the area you are likely to travel through beech forest, tussock lands and past impressive rock formations.

As already stated this cache is near the summit so will take you from the beaten track to make your own way up. My prefered (Scenic)route to this cache would be to park at the Woolshed Creek carpark and follow the route up the south ridge, this is about 13km round trip with a verticle rise of 1150m (I have listed a series of waypoints which will take you along this route). Alternatively you could park at the Sharplin falls carpark and follow the route to the summit from that side.

Whilst on the tramp you will travel through a wide variety of terrain, past some great scenery and once you start your ascent you are unlikely to see any other trampers. Because of this and the fact that the weather is extremely changable and unpredictable ensure that you use good common sense and come prepared, also advise someone of where you are going!

To be able to log this cache you are required to complete either of the following requirements:

1. Post a photo from the top with your log (You can include yourself, cache or some of the great scenery from the top as proof) or;
2. If you don't have camera then E-mail me through my profile the 15 word statement written on the wooden fence around Millenium cairn on the summit.

The cache is a 1 litre camo painted snap lock container that contains several swaps for the outdoor enthusiest.

There are several other caches in the area so why not check them out while in the area.
