UPDATED LOGGING REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LOGS SUBMITTED AFTER 5 september 2012, due to recent logging changes**
To receive credit for this Earthcache, you must follow all the requirements stated below.
Requirements:
* Email the answers to me and log your find in English. You may include your language as well. You do not have to wait for my approval.
* Include everyone's name who will be logging the find in your answer Email.
* Do not include the answers or a picture in a note.
* Do not include the answers in the log.
1. Include the name of the farmer's daughter who was instrumental in preventing a hydroelectric plant from the area during the early 1900's.
2. Log the types of rocks in the area, underfoot and surrounding the falls. (You do not have to walk off the trail to do this.)
3. If the upper portion of the falls drops 11 meters (36 feet), estimate the distance the lower portion drops into the ravine below. (+/- 1 meter)
4. Explain why you think the river water is the "color" it is.

"Gullfoss is actually two separate waterfalls: the upper portion drops about 11 meters (36 feet) and the lower portion drops even further. Water flows over Gullfoss at a rate of about 109 cubic meters per second into a 2.5 kilometer (1 1/2 miles) ravine, whose river bedrock was formed during an interglacial period.
In 1979, an agreement was made to make the area around Gullfoss a nature reserve. The vegetation of the area is very fragile and may not be disturbed
by agriculture, fertilization, or grazing."
The area is well-marked and has plenty of parking. At the upper lot, is a stone plaque to remember the farmer's daughter instrumental in preventing a hydroelectric plant from the area during the early 1900's.
The coordinates lead you to one of many perfect spots for viewing this magnificent natural wonder. Once at the Earthcache, you will have various opportunities to walk along one of the many marked paths. Be careful, it may be slippery!
As you walk the paths by the falls, notice the rocks surrounding you and underfoot. Most of the mountains in this area are of tuff (formed when magma comes into contact with water, which causes it to cool very quickly.) But what is underfoot?
If you are lucky and it is sunny, you may even see a rainbow! Have fun, be safe, and keep on the paths!
