Geocache Description:

QFC Break-up Scavenger Rally, be there, or don't.

QFC Break-up Scavenger Rally

Please RSVP ASAP.

Q (the dude in the picture), F (the person staying in South Africa) and C (the person exploring the big world), would like you to join us for our first and final team event.

Unfortunately C or Charlie or Charles or Chucky (what the C really stands for) will be leaving us for greener pastures at the end of this year/ some time early next year. For this reason we decided to hold our first and final Geocaching event as QFC.

F (the last man standing) will remain as team QFC and Geocache in South Africa, C on the other hand will become C3P (a conglomeration of Part 3 and C) and will head off into the blue yonder.

1. Event structure

So now that you know the reason for the event, let talk a little about this Scavenger Rally. I hope this is not the section where you get put off the event. Looking at similar events to this in the UK everyone loved it! This event is lightly based on an event that our Travel Bug Cher Ami recently attended. That event was called Hunt and Munch - Year 2 and was hosted by harrogate hunters I have been in contact with HH and chatted about what people get up to at an event like this. I have also received the full itinerary for Hunt and Much - Year 2.

Food will be on a bring and braai structure. A gas braai and table will be available. Please bring own drinks/ food/ chairs etc. etc.

Scavenger

You will be required to find items of significant (yes Walkerville is interesting) interest to the Walkerville and the surrounding areas. Depending on the distance between the item and the home base of the event you will be awarded points. Team with the most points wins.

Rally

The Cachers that attend this event will group themselves into teams of 4 (if this is possible) otherwise teams of 3 and 2 will be allowed on the day. Each team will require a car (this is the rally part) to transport themselves round the metropolis of Walkerville and surrounding areas. Drivers will not be allowed to read the GPS/ map/ newspaper when driving and will have to be directed by one of the other team members.

2. Where

Walkerville is/was a peaceful small-holdings area just on the southern border of Johannesburg. It shares exciting neighbours Kibler Part, Meyerton, De Deur, Orange Farms, Lenasia and Wheelers Farms. To get there (easiest way) (from jo'burg) jump on the M1 South, head over the double decker section, past Gold Reef City, past South Gate mall and keep on going for aprox 30 km until you see the Spar on your left and stop at the 4-Way stop. (welcome to Walkerville).

The co-ordinates will lead you to a gate (or close to one), number 144 Golf Course Road.

3. When

The only time left in C's busy schedule is the 11th of November. Race starts 1 pm sharp so be there early, should be over (if you want to leave Walkerville) by 7ish.

4. Prizes

Entrance to the race will cost you a large geocaching swag item. Contestants will fill a cache container with geocaching swag that will go to the winner. Winner will also be mentioned on the news section of www.GeocachingRanking.com. :)

5. Them Terms and Conditions things.

  • Full geocaching rules and regulations apply. As cache/event setter we am not responsible for any problems encountered during the day, including motoring accidents, speeding etc etc.
  • It is entirely your responsibility if you take part in the event.
  • By setting out to this event, the driver is responsible for any third party action that may arise during the day. I as organiser, am not responsible for any action at all
  • See notes below re driver
  • The route could be 50-100 kilometres so please ensure you have a full tank of petrol as there are not many petrol stations on route.
  • It might be advisable to bring a paper road map (includes minor roads) and have at least two GPS's in the car (although this may not be possible).
  • Please note that Pocket PC's / In car Navigation software etc etc with memory map will be banned on the day !
  • Map software on GPS's will also be banned
  • Although there is no way I can enforce these rules, please abide by them and make it a fair 'competition'
  • Full rules and instructions will be given on the day. First vehicle to depart by 2pm so please be prompt !

6. Driver.

  • The Driver has to apply to all SA driving laws and therefore as such take not part in the treasure hunt (looking at GPS, reading maps, making decisions etc.
  • He can take instructions from passengers as to which direction to drive in.
  • He must be in full control of the vehicle and even though the event is time based all speeding laws must be followed, and obviously drive slower if the conditions require.
  • Co-ordinates/ waypoints must be ignored/ abandoned if the road conditions or traffic does not allow safe stopping.
  • It is the drivers complete responsibility for the event and his passengers
  • Driving faster than you would for a 'average' day out in the countryside is the drivers responsibility, and I suggest for this event should not happen.

7. Waypoints.

For all of those with older GPS's that take all day to enter coordinates, a list of most of the cooridnates that you will be visiting is listed as waypoints on this page. Use GSAK to easily push them to your GPS. Please note that the naming convention is the same one that will be used at the event so it is suggested to stick to it.
Waypoints will only be placed on the day of the event, so checking these spots before the event will be a waste of time
These waypoints are released on good faith, please do not abuse this.
Pre-calculted routes will hamper rather than help you.

HOPE TO SEE AS MANY PEOPLE THERE AS POSSIBLE.

Please RSVP ASAP.
