Geocache Description:

Cache is in a City of Alexandria Park. Access requires either stair-climbing or a short walk on a packed dirt road. Drive only on paved areas.

This cache is placed to honor Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, who was one of a small number of women who played professional baseball in the Negro League. She was primarily a pitcher, but also played second base. She played semi-pro baseball in the Washington, DC, area for various teams, including for the Alexandria All-Stars. Ms. Johnson was denied a tryout in Alexandria by the All-American Girls Baseball League (subject of the movie “A League of Their Own”). She was discovered in 1953 by Bish Tyson, a former player with the Negro League, while practicing on a field in Washington, DC. She pitched for three seasons in the regular rotation for the Indianapolis Clowns. For two seasons she was a teammate of Hank Aaron. According to a posting on the NLBPA, Ms. Johnson currently lives in Washington, DC. "Peanut" was honored on June 5, 2008, when she was a first-round honorary draft choice for the Washington Nationals, in a Major League Baseball effort to honor the living Negro League players (one of whom is 103 years old!). This cache can be found at N 38º AB.CDE, W 77º FG.HIJ where: AB = The age “Peanut” was when she started playing baseball every day, plus total professional games won, plus total games lost; C = number of women who played in the Negro League, minus 1; DE = sum of digits in her birth year, plus the sum of the digits of the bottom of her batting average range; FG = Number of seasons she played, times 2; HI = Her birth day, plus number of years she was a licensed nurse; J = The number of seasons “Peanut” pitched for the Clowns, minus the number of women who played in the Negro League Be aware that there are times of the day and evening when this is a very high muggle area. It would be inappropriate to search during these times. Bring your own pen and write small. Please place the container in exactly the same place as you found it! This cache is placed with the approval of the City of Alexandria Parks and Recreation Dept. Congratulations to flowerman for his FTF!
