Geocache Description:

This cache is just outside the OKEHAMPTON FIRING RANGE but in case you stray, please follow the advice below. Before you plan your visit you MUST check the DARTMOOR FIRING NOTICE. For information see: http://www.dartmoor-ranges.co.uk Beware making an attempt for this cache if there is firing on the Okehampton Ranges. Do not go past the Range Marker posts when the Range Flags (Red Fags) are Flying. Do not pick up any object in the area due to the fact that it is adjoins a Military Training Area where Troops use "Blank Ammunition". Walking up the Red-a-ven Brook from Meldon Quarry, you pass many small waterfalls. You also pass various old mining and military artifacts - a vehicle track with a ford, the remains of a rail track used to provide moving targets for shooting practice and we can guess what sort of training went on in steep sided Sniper's Gully. The cache is at the bottom of what I believe to be Sniper's Gulley. The cache is a small screw lid pot with a log in a film container inside. It will hold small items. May not have a pen. (If you want to make a walk of it, can I suggest you take the following route. Park at the Meldon Dam car park - where there are toilets. Walk over the dam and turn left down the steps. Go downstream to 'Viaduct View'. Then turn up the Red-a-Ven Brook valley and follow the stream uphill to 'Get Your Head Down' and 'Lido-Yes Tor'. Continue up, joining the military track before turning left on the col to 'West Mill Tor'. Reverse your course and follow the elephant track up 'Yes Tor', 'High Willhays' and on to 'Fordsland Ledge'. Drop down to 'Black Tor' - following animal tracks through the featherbed is best. If you want to take in 'Shelstone Tor' as well, drop straight down to the river and then up 100 m before rising slowly up animal tracks to Shelstone. Then back to Meldon. Alternatively go from Black Tor to the track bend at N50 41.809 W004 01.568 and then curl around Longstone Hill back to the dam. Hope you enjoy the walk and the caches.)
