This is an excellent day trip with great views over the plains, port hill, Puketeraki range and the kaikouras. Take the wooded gully track that climbs slowly then drops down to a stream. After that it’s a long zigzag climb until you come to an opening and a track junction. Take the summit track that is the last slog to the ridgeline. After that it’s a nice walk through the tussock grassland to the summit. The views are fantastic so make shore you take a camera.
Distance and time
7-8 km 4-6 hours
Important note.
As this is a summit walk please check the weather reports and take the proper equipment, good walking boots, raincoat, packed lunch etc and don’t forget the camera.
Please keep to the track and avoid taking shortcuts
Let someone know where you are going- Mt Thomas track
Cache Box
The box is a 800ml snap lock green container with “G.P.S geocaching” written on the lid.
When hidden place inside was:
Compass zip pull
Emergency blanket
Bottle loop wrist strap
Carabiner key ring
Luggage tag
Travel coin
Logbook and pencil+pen
I want to keep this a worth while cache to look for. not only for the views but for the stuff in the cache. All the trade items are new and if you make a trade please trade with something that is useful. No plastic toy or rubber balls.
When replacing the cache please make sure it can’t be seen and replace the rocks so it looks like they were meant to be there. This is an easy cache to find if you know where to look.
One last thing
As this is my first cache hide any tips or comments would be great for my next and many more cache boxes
Thanks
