This pass was the only route over the mountain from Swellendam to
the Cape and named Gantouw Pass in 1801 by Captain Robert
Percival.
In 1821 4500 ox wagons took this passage and one out of every five
(about 900) were damage. This is the reason why Sir Galbraith Lowry
Cole, Governor of the Cape Colony asked Charles Mitchell in 1828 in
this pass could be improved.
Due to the improvements that was completed by 6 Julie 1830 it took
the boers 30 hours to travel from Swellendam to the Cape as the
orginal 60 hours. The spores of these wagons used years ago have
left trail carved into the rocks.
To the right up the hill of these marks two of the signal cannons
which they used can be seen. The view from the top is spectacular
and you can see the whole False Bay to Table Mountain in the
distance.
