Geocache Description:

This cache is placed just off the privately owned/maintained Mountain bike trails along the abandoned railroad tracks. It is on the Millstone Hill Touring Center trails in Websterville, VT. I received permission to use this section of trails to allow geocachers to see this train wreck.

The Millstone Hill Touring Center (visit link)
has created a series of trails around the historic granite quarries. They have more than 50 miles of well maintained trails for hiking, biking and X-C skiing.
The Millstone Hill Touring center is working on an even larger project, that will connect several communities. They usually ask a fee to use their trails, but have given permission to me as a member, for geocachers to use this section of trail to seek the Train Wreck cache. If you would like to use these trails for future hiking, biking and X-C skiing, please go to there website and support these wonderful trails.
If you like these trails tell your friends to support the Millstone Hill Touring Center.

Please follow these directions.
Park at the Barre Town Recreation Facility N 44* 09.858, W 072* 29.351.
Then go to the Beaver Pond trail at N 44* 09.836, W 072* 29.278.
Follow the Beaver pond trail and then turn left onto the Abbott Run trail.
The actual train wreck is a flatbed car with granite blocks still on top of it. Most of the timbers have decayed and some of the metal pieces have been vandalized. It appears to have jumped the tracks and stopped in the thick woods at N 44* 09.962, W 072* 28.968, about 50 feet away from the tracks. Often these cars were damaged and weren’t worth salvaging, and left to rot where they stopped.
The cache is in a 3 quart lock + lock about 100 feet away from the wreck at N 44* 09.970, W 072* 28.988.
Thick tree cover may affect GPS readings.

For folks without GPSers:
Here are the directions:
Go to the Recreation Facility Shelter behind the Barretown Elementary School on the Websterville Road in Barretown, VT. Parking and restrooms are available here until winter.
From the Barretown Recreation Facility shelter, walk to the bike path just beyond the outhouses.
Go NE on the bike path until you see a black chain-link fence on your left.
Count the fence post of this chain link and turn right at the 9th post onto the Nature Trail (there will be a sign for each trail).
Follow the Nature trail SW for about 150 feet and turn left onto the Beaver Pond trail.
Go down the hill and thru an offset 4 way intersections. Continue on Beaver Pond trail across the rickety little bridge over the stream and continue on the trail about 280 yards, to a marked jct of Abbot Run (also marked Touring center). Turn left and follow Abbots Run NE for about 400 yards until it meets with the old railroad with 4 rails. Turn left and follow these rails for about 650 feet until the bike trail turns right at the actual train wreck. From the train wreck, go back across the tracks and find a big (4foot diam) dead pine tree within 50 feet of the tracks the cache will be hidden within 20 feet of the pine tree.
