Geocache Description:

An old cache resurected, as a magnetic micro!

Well it may only be a local roadhouse now, but in the early 1700’s an establishment on this site was earning a reputation for it’s health giving chalybeate spring waters.

Indeed Sunninghill Wells became as noted as Epsom, Tunbridge Wells, Buxton and Bath. In fact some regarded Sunninghill Wells as superior to most of the famous spa towns because it was smaller and more select.

When Queen Anne instituted the races at Ascot Heath, in 1711, the horses were stabled here.

By the late 1700’s the then vicar of the area wrote of “….persons of great rank and fortune at The Wells.” Public breakfasts of great substance were served at one shilling per head and by the early 1800’s there were breakfasts and balls for up to 200 persons.

By 1865 the bubble had burst and the ballroom was demolished, the other buildings followed soon.

On a more sinister note, in 1683 (another source says 1783) John Lane of Cowarth was shot dead by two highway men here!

In recent years the site has been home to a traditional pub, a family restaurant, a bit of a night club and now a restaurant with Easteender's connections.
