Described as the boldest and most striking of headlands between Falmouth and Plymouth, Dodman Point or the Dodman has been the site of many shipwrecks.
In 1896 a local parson had the granite cross erected to act as a landmark for shipping. However this failed to save two war ships in the following year.
More recently the pleasure boat Darlwin sank with all passengers in 1966.
Dodman Point is a large headland which has been fortified since ancient times, with two large ramparts and ditches cut into the ground to protect it.
The area south of and including the massive earthworks known as The Bulwark is a site of national archaeological importance. The landscape is distinct from the softer scenery of the rest of the Roseland Heritage Coast and within the Bulwark, the historic landscape of the Dodman Promontory Fort is remote and unspoilt.
Within the Iron Age Fort, remains of the ancient strip-field system can be clearly seen, even though some areas have been turned into larger fields. The remaining hedge banks have suffered from erosion and rabbit and stock damage, although action is now being taken to reverse the situation. A programme of scrub control is also being undertaken to protect the Scheduled Ancient Monument and to improve the area for wildlife.
On either side of the Dodman are 2 of my favourite beaches Hemmick & Vault (Bow) Beaches, both local secrets so don’t go telling too many people about them.
The cache is a small (1.1l) clip & lock box containing log book, pencil and swaps.
