What?! Monsters on an unassuming city street?!
"The 'Grendels' Are Out There"
This is my first geocache placement, so bear with me.
The title is a nod to Rob Thurman's "NightLife," although this is in no way a plug for the book. I just happened
to have finished reading the book shortly before seeing the things that I hope you'll soon see, and it reminded me
of his use of the word 'Grendel.'
So, for the fantasy lovers out there, I hope you get a smile out of this cache. It's plop in the middle of the
city, and I hope you'll agree that what you'll see is unique, and not at all what you'd expect. In fact, it took me several lunchtime walks to even notice the 'Grendels,' and that only after a friend pointed them out. You don't see much of the world when you watch your shoes while walking...
This is sort of a combination cache - the point of it is to see some very unique things, but I just couldn't see
not having something concrete to find. To that end, the cache to find is a black magnetic key holder, with a log. Bring a pen.
Note that this cache is in a not-so-great part of the city; it's fine to go there during the day (I found it on one of my lunchtime walks), but I'd avoid going there at night. Otherwise, both the difficulty and terrain are quite easy. Just keep in mind that the key holder isn't the point...
I hope you enjoy the sights-to-see; if you find one 'Grendel,' you just might be surprised that you could very well be surrounded...
Update as of 02/15/2009: There are two main things to see (besides the magnetic key holder). One is above the cache, one (the coolest one!) is across the street, bolted to a rowhouse, and is likely obstructed by tree leaves in the spring/summer. So you'll have to walk across the street. I hope you don't miss them. They're worth seeing, and you'll leave thinking that you've seen something truly unique.
For those trying to hunt multiple caches in a single run, you might consider 'Heart of the Arts' by Baltimore Bill and Knitting Ellen. It's within a reasonable walk of this one, although I found it tough to find without a hint...
Note that this is in the city, and my gps was a bit squirrely, so the coordinates were taken in the middle of the street (and that's not where the cache is:) )
