Chalkpit Bridge at Waltham St.Lawrence
Waltham St.Lawrence is a lovely little hamlet with a terrific public house and a church at its centre. The Church of St.Lawrence was mentioned in the Domesday Book and is, in parts, over 850 years old. It is one of the few churches that still remember the traditional name of its north doorway, that of the
Devil’s Door. There is a little picture of a devil beside it to remind us that when the vicar enters the church’s south door, the devil exits through the north and into his shadowy side of the churchyard.
The Bell Inn dates back to the 16th century and is a fine example of a Wealden Hall-house, known for their double-height open halls and "jettied" overhanging first floors. They are apparently quite rare in this area, being usually found in Sussex.
More about Waltham St.Lawrence can be seen on the
Parish Website.
To get to the cache you can either park in the village centre close to the Bell Inn, and walk around to the start of the track, or you can park a little nearer at the recommended parking coordinates. The OS map indicates the track as a 'road used as a public path'. There are however signs that vehicles have recently used this path...
