Montemor-o-Velho, resolveu visitar o famoso castelo, e ficou
voz vinda do além, falava-lhes via telemóvel: “Huuummm…. Oh
jurava…”.
Não! Não podia
ser! Uma cache no castelo? Se calhar até estava recheada de
geocoins… Não! Isso não podia ser…!
O simpático
casal tinha lá passado 5 horas a recolher informações e
“As
“Bem…”,
pensaram eles, “o melhor a fazer será ir lá, encontrar a tal
Found, regressaram lentamente a casa, dando voltas à cabeça…
desistir! Vamos a casa tirar isto a limpo!
O GPS não mente… e o número mágico apareceu: 162m. O simpático
casal não cabia em si de alegria!
Paço das infantas; torre sineira; igreja / Palace ruins; bell tower;
church
tema totalmente distinto do d’“As muralhas do Mondego”…
As
conspirações do Dan Brown já estiveram na
moda!
escreves…

misterioso retábulo da Última Ceia /Inside the church – Expecting Virgin;

Supper
A long long time ago, a nice
young couple visited Montemor-o-Velho and its surroundings.
They enjoyed its famous castle a lot and they were truly
amazed with everything they saw: all the places inside the
castle were well identified and there was a short explanation
for every detail; there was also a large grass field where
people could relax and read a book; a nice bar perfectly
camouflaged within the castle walls served fresh drinks… even
the church of Santa Maria da Alcáçova kept its own secrets –
secrets that would give Dan Brown the creeps! So they finally
made their decision: they would place a multi-cache in that
great castle to make sure every geocacher visiting the spot
would get to know all those nice places: the alcáçova (main
wall), the castelejo, the keep, and the church (and its weird
wooden altarpiece that made the nice couple lose so much time
reading through thousands of books in
libraries…).
Castelejo; porta
da traição; brasão / Inside
walls; postern gate; coat of arms
The research about the mysterious
altarpiece took them a lot of time… and suddenly the nice couple
receives a sign: a voice, speaking through a mobile phone:
“Huuummm… buddy tell me… are you sure about it? I mean… did you
take a good look at the maps website? You see… I’m not sure about
it but I’d swear there’s already a cache in that castle
…”
It couldn’t be! A cache in the
castle! And who knows… maybe it was loaded with hundreds of
geocoins…! No! It couldn’t be true!
The nice couple had been in that
castle for 5 hours straight collecting data and photos, picking the
right place to hide the cache and they hadn’t realized there was
another cache already in there?! No! It made no sense! It couldn’t
be true!
A quick search through the Internet revealed what they feared the
most: there was actually another cache in the castle!
“As
muralhas do Mondego” by lestro was the name of the curse!
“Well…” they thought, “the best
thing to do is finding it, log it and… and… what if we placed it
back half-exposed and… you know… sometimes caches disappear and…”
But the cache was so nice, so very well hidden and the web page was
so good… the nice couple could never do such thing!
The nice couple found the cache
and went back home, still thinking how the hell could they solve
this problem. They knew it wasn’t possible to place 2 caches in the
same spot. Suddenly half of the nice couple had an
idea:
- Wait a minute! There can be 2
caches in the same spot if they respect the rules: they only have
to be placed 0,1 mile apart from each other. That’s all! Let’s
check!
- What? You’re nuts! We’re so
lucky I bet they’re 0,09 mile apart! Drop it! Let’s just have
something for lunch… I heard people cook a special dish of rice and
peas around here!
- No! I’m not giving up! Let’s go
home and check it! I must know!
The GPS never lies and the
magic number appeared: 0,1007 mile. The nice couple was truly
happy!
Torre de menagem;

But the worst was yet to
come: they still had to write a cache webpage featuring a different
subject from “As muralhas do Mondego”…
The nice couple thought
about it for months but they couldn’t come up with something really
different and so they gave up. Nothing would ever justify the
existence of another cache in the same spot…
- And now what? Months have
gone by and we still don’t have a webpage for the cache! Can’t you
stop thinking about rice with peas and give me a hand with
this?
- That’s it! Rice and peas!
Rice is a very important crop around Montemor-o-Velho. There are
lots of rice fields in there! We could write about it! Actually…
rice is a very interesting plant: its genome is very simple and
easy to manipulate… actually: peas are also plants and so we could
write about it too and…
- Ok! That’s enough! You
want to write about rice and its importance as a crop in
Montemor-o-Velho, that’s fine. But peas??? Who cares about peas?
That stinks! I still think we should write about that altarpiece,
you know… pretend this is all a Dan Brown conspiracy! That would be
really interesting and…
- No way! Dan Brown
conspiracies are totally old-fashioned!
- Huuummm… alright… if you
want to write about rice, go ahead. No one reads the giant texts
you write anyway…

O arroz (Oryza sativa e
comprimento. A parte que comemos é a
semente.
Curiosidades:
- O arroz é um alimento universal que
fornece mais de 1/5 das calorias consumidas pelos
humanos.
- O vulgarmente denominado “arroz selvagem”
domesticada.
O arroz carolino (o tipo cultivado no Baixo Mondego) é considerado
Rice is two species
(Oryza sativa e
Oryza glaberrima) of grass
plant native to tropical and subtropical southern and southeastern
Asia and to Africa. Rice was brought to Europe eventually, and on
to South America by the Spanish and
Portuguese.
Rice is an annual plant (it
only lives for a year) growing to 2 m high, with long slender
leaves 50-100 cm long. The part of the plant we eat is the
seed.
Curiosities:
- Rice is
a universal food that provides more than one fifth of the calories
consumed by humans.
- The term
"wild rice" can refer to wild species of Oryza, but conventionally
refers to species of the related genus Zizania, both wild and
domesticated.
- In
China, archaeologists have excavated rice grains that dating back
to 5000 BC.
Rice cultivation was
introduced in Portugal during the kingdom of D. Dinis, in the lower
Mondego, around Montemor-o-Velho. The seeds used had come from
Sevilla, Spain.
Carolina rice (the brand
cultivated in Montemor-o-Velho) is the best brand to cook
Portuguese dishes since it absorbs odours.
Every year, in
Montemor-o-Velho, there is the Rice Festival (Festival do Arroz) in
which several local restaurants cook their best recipes of rice
dishes. I wonder if they cook rice with peas?!
Nota
final:
desviar a atenção do verdadeiro mistério ali guardado. Ou então
isto é só especulação… ;) mas que ele lá está… isso está!
Final
note:
The nice couple has never
figured out the mystery of the altarpiece, not even they’ve managed
to know when it was made, although they’ve searched through every
library and book written about that church. The Expecting Virgin
(made by Mestre Pêro de Coimbra) seems to be the only important
thing in there… Or maybe it was actually put in there to steal the
visitor’s attention from the true mystery kept in there. Or maybe
this is all speculation… ;) but I can assure you: the altarpiece is
in there and can be seen by everyone!
