Geocache Description:

This is a short walk which takes you via Beeleigh Falls and the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. Care may be required with smaller children but only the marked footpaths are used so no need to get wet!

This cache takes you to Beeleigh Falls which mark the confluence of the River Chelmer and the Blackwater, which flows in from the left. The Chelmer tumbles over the weir beyond the lock, which walkers can cross by footbridge. A footpath passes Beeleigh Falls House, formally a mill house, which still has the remains of an 1845 Wentworth compound steam engine, and its Elephant boiler, which turned the mill stones by providing the steam. A little further along the same path is beautiful Beeleigh Abbey. The river Blackwater rises in the North West of the County as the river Pant, and proceeds as a stream through to Braintree where the name changes to the Blackwater for the rest of it’s journey to the sea. On the way the Blackwater passes through Stisted, Bradwell, Coggeshall, Coggeshall Hamlet, Feering, Kelvedon, near Witham, Wickham Bishops, Langford to Beeleigh where it meets the Chelmer. For a while it is included in the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation, but at Heybridge it spurs off through a private garden and disappears down a pipe to re-emerge into the tidal estuary at Maldon as the Tidal Blackwater. The falls attract a variety of birds including herons, egrets and kingfishers. A track off the B1019 Maldon to Hatfield Peverel Road will take you to N51°44.638 E000°39.855 where you can park. Leave the A1019 opposite the Langford and Ulting Village Hall and follow the Maldon Golf Club sign. You will need the information at N51°44.623 E000°39.855 to determine the cache co-ordinates. A = Number of locks between Cuton Lock and Hoe Mill Lock B = Number of boats pictured on the map C = 2 x A You will also need to determine D on your way. D = half the length of the navigation. Final Cache location is: N51°AA.3CC E000°3(D+B).DDA (or thereabouts. Had to move it a little for better concealment but it's near enough to find. Some people with fancy new accurate units have found it to be out but everyone finds it!)
