Geocache Description:

This challenging multi-stage cache will take in several fine views from the Towers and Tors around Somerset. There are 4 stages all together; two virtual stages, another cache and the final cache. The total distance to travel between these stages is about 30 miles. NOTE: You should NOT Log the cache as "FOUND" until you have gathered the clues and found the FINAL location. If you have started the Challenge, please feel free to post a "NOTE" to share that you are working on it!

In this part of Somerset it seems you can look at the horizon and always see one of these: Glastonbury Tor, Alfred’s tower, Cranmore Tower and the final cache tower. I like high points, and the views that they give. You may also realize from my profession that I like high points for another reason! There are 4 stages and you can do them in any order but you will need to do 1-3 before you can find the final cache. Stage 1 is a virtual cache on the top of Glastonbury Tor. Go to the given coordinates above and you will find a metal plaque. This plaque was given as a gift of the Wells and District Centre of National Trust Members in year [KLMN]. Post a "NOTE" not a "FOUND IT" at this point. B = N + K F = N J = K Stage 2 is a virtual cache on top of Alfred’s Tower at coordinates: N51 06.892 W2 21.899. This tower is only technically inside Somerset by a few hundred feet, on the border with Wiltshire. There are several challenges here: You need to get to the top of the tower and there are over 200 steps involved which is reflected in the “Terrain” rating. The other challenge is that the tower is normally closed from 1 November until mid- March. Lastly, if you are a National Trust member admission to climb is free, otherwise there is a fee NOTE the tower is ONLY open on Weekends during part of the season so plan your visit well. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stourhead/ OR https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/place-pages/317/pages/opening-times-calendar When you reach the top you should take in the wonderful views! To assist you there are some plaques that indicate the names of features and their distances from Alfred’s Tower. on the SOUTH facing view, find the following information: The distance to the location just North of West is PQ miles The distance to the first location listed to the North of the previous is RS miles The altitude stated on the plaque is TUV ft above sea level. D = R + S H = Q I = V Stage 3 is the Cranmore Tower cache - GCXN80. You need to complete this multi-cache and find the needed clue in its final cache box. The clue will give you the values of A, C, E and G. Please leave the clue note there and copy it down. Final Cache Now the final can be found at the coordinates N 51 AB.CDE W 2 FG.HIJ This final location is also near another tower or tor with a great view. NOTE: Final Cache has been moved to allow access without leaving Public footpath. The formula is the same but you will need to add the following offsets: N + .006 W + .007 (or roughly 50ft NW). Please do not disturb the drystone wall. Now post that "FOUND IT" log and collect your Smiley Face! :-D
