Plan Zuid

Deze multicache neemt je mee door het vooroorlogse Amsterdam Zuid. De tocht is ongeveer 4 kilometer. De tocht is bedoeld om lopend of met de fiets te doen. Het beginpunt (Victorieplein) is goed bereikbaar met het openbaar vervoer, er stoppen verschillende trams en bussen, vanaf station Amsterdam Amstel is het tien minuten lopen. Wie toch met de auto komt moet rekening houden met betaald parkeren in het hele gebied.

This multicache takes you through the old south of Amsterdam. The route is about 4 kilometers, best done walking or cycling. The starting point (Victorieplein) is easy to get to by public transport, trams and busses stop here and from trainstation Amsterdam Amstel it's a 10 minute walk. If you want to take your car, be reminded that parking is not free in this area.

Inleiding

Deze multicache leidt je door het 'Plan Zuid' heen. Dit plan is het stedebouwkundig ontwerp voor de zuidelijke uitbreiding van Amsterdam uit 1917. Het plan is gemaakt door architect Berlage en is grotendeels uitgevoerd tussen 1917 en 1932. Plan Zuid kenmerkt zich door brede momumentale hoofdwegen met daartussen kortere intieme woonstraatjes en buurtpleintjes. De gebouwen zijn niet door Berlage zelf ontworpen, maar door verschillende 'Amsterdamse school'-architecten. Eén van de aspecten van de Amsterdamse School is het "opfleuren" van de gebouwen met kunstwerken, vaak aan de gevel bevestigd, soms los. In de afgelopen decennia zijn daar in dit gebied nog eens de nodige standbeelden van bekende en minder bekende mensen bijgekomen. Zodoende staat Amsterdam Zuid vol met beelden. Deze cache laat je Amsterdam Zuid zien aan de hand van een aantal van die beelden.

Waypoint A: N 52° 20.760 - E004° 54.220
De tocht begint bij het beeld van Hendrik Petrus Berlage. Zijn bekendste gebouw is de naar hem vernoemde Beurs van Berlage aan het Damrak, maar deze tocht richt zich op het door hem gemaakte Plan Zuid. Het standbeeld staat niet toevallig op deze plaats, je staat hier namelijk op een markant punt van het Plan Zuid, op deze plek komen drie hoofdwegen bij elkaar (de Vrijheidslaan splitst hier in de Churchilllaan en Rooseveltlaan).
Achter het beeld van Berlage staat de 'Wolkenkrabber' van architect J.F. Staal. Dit gebouw uit 1931 was het eerste hoogbouwproject voor woningen in Nederland, het is lange tijd het hoogste gebouw van Amsterdam geweest.

Waypoint B: N 52° 20.730 - E004° 54.013
Achter de Wolkenkrabber bevindt zich het Merwedeplein. Op nummer 37 woonde Anne Frank met haar familie van 1933 tot 1942 (totdat ze moesten onderduiken). In de Rivierenbuurt, waar je nu middenin staat, woonden vlak voor en tijdens de oorlog zo'n 17000 joden, slechts 4000 van hen hebben de oorlog overleefd. Het beeldje staat er overigens pas sinds juli 2005.

Waypoint C: N 52° 20.800 - E004° 54.016
Je bent nu op de Churchilllaan, één van de hoofdwegen van Oud-Zuid. Het is een brede weg met veel verkeer, links en rechts zie je woningen in de Amsterdamse School stijl. Je staat bij het eerste van twee standbeelden in de groene strook van de Churchilllaan. Loop de hele straat uit tot waypoint D. Onderweg kom je het tweede standbeeld tegen, beantwoord dan de volgende vraag:
Van wie staat er GEEN standbeeld in de Churchilllaan?

Het juiste antwoord is C.

Waypoint D: N 52° 20.855 - E004° 53.139
Je bent op nu het Muzenplein. Het beeldentuintje aan het water is een rustig plekje dat je gemakkelijk over het hoofd ziet middenin de drukke stad. Je kijkt hier uit op een knooppunt van kanalen. Er staan beelden van spelende kinderen met dieren, allemaal van verschillende beeldhouwers.
Hoeveel beeldjes zijn het? (Tel alleen de losse beeldjes die beneden staan.) Het antwoord is D.

Waypoint E: N 52° 20.964 - E004° 52.772
Basisschool De Wielewaal bestaat sinds 1927 en was de eerste openbare Montessorischool voor lager onderwijs in Amsterdam. Op het schoolplein staat een beeldje "aan Maria Montessori".
E = het vierde cijfer op de sokkel van het standbeeld.

Waypoint F: N 52° 20.824 - E004° 52.351
Symmetrie is een belangrijk uitgangspunt in Berlages Plan Zuid. Op het Minervaplein is dit goed te zien. Aan beide kanten van het plein zie je dezelfde gebouwen. Je staat bij een beeld op een hoge sokkel. De afgebeelde man is nogal in gedachten verzonken, hij vraagt zich waarschijnlijk af waar de cache verstopt ligt...

Het van Tuyl van Serooskerkenplein is een voorbeeld van de vele kleine buurtpleintjes die in het Plan Zuid te vinden zijn.

Waypoint H: N 52° 20.632 - E004° 51.397
Je bent nu op het Stadionplein. Je staat tussen de twee Citroëngarages en voor je staat het Olympisch Stadion, allemaal ontworpen door architect Jan Wils. Het stadion staat er eigenlijk dankzij de Nederlandse bevolking. Twee jaar voordat de Olympische spelen naar Amsterdam zouden komen wilde de overheid het hele project afblazen, het was te duur. Spontaan werd er geld ingezameld door de bevolking en zo kon het stadion er toch komen. Het was een groot succes, het stadion werd ook na de spelen nog veel gebruikt en er kwam zelfs een tweede ring van tribunes op. Jarenlang speelde Ajax hier zijn europacupwedstrijden, maar na de opening van de Amsterdam Arena in 1996 was het stadion overbodig en bovendien verouderd. De gemeente wilde het slopen. Weer was het de bevolking die in actie kwam en weer werd geld ingezameld, zodat het stadion gerenoveerd kon worden. De tweede ring ging er weer af en het stadion werd zoveel mogelijk naar het oorspronkelijke ontwerp teruggebracht. In 2000 werd het stadion heropend, het wordt nu voornamelijk gebruikt voor atletiek.
Wanneer waren de Olympische spelen ook alweer in Amsterdam? Neem het derde cijfer van het jaartal, dit is H.

Introduction

This multicache takes you through 'Plan Zuid' ('Plan South'). This is the Amsterdam expansion plan dating from 1917. The plan was designed by famous architect Berlage. Most of the plan has been built between 1917 and 1932. Plan Zuid is characterized by wide monumental main roads, with intimate residential streets in between. The buildings are not designed by Berlage himself, but by architects of the 'Amsterdam School'. One of the aspects of the Amsterdam School is the brightening of the buildings with artworks, usually on the walls. In the past decades numerous statues of famous (and not so famous) people have been erected in this area. This cache route will take you throught this area along a few of those statues.

Waypoint A: N 52° 20.760 - E004° 54.220
The tour begins in front of the statue of Hendrik Petrus Berlage. His most famous building is the 'Beurs van Berlage' on the Damrak, but this tour will focus on his Plan Zuid. It's not a coincidence this statue is here, this place is one of the anchorpoints of the plan. Three major roads join here (Vrijheidslaan splits into Churchilllaan and Rooseveltlaan).
Behind the statue you can see the 'Wolkenkrabber' designed by architect J.F. Staal. This building (dating from 1931) was the first highrise apartmentbuilding in The Netherlands and it used to be the highest building of Amsterdam for a long time.

Waypoint B: N 52° 20.730 - E004° 54.013
Behind the Wolkenkrabber is the Merwedeplein. Number 37 is where Anne Frank used to live with her family (1933-1942) before they had to go into hiding. 17000 Jewish people used to live in the 'Rivierenbuurt' (the name of this neighbourhood) before and during the war. Only 4000 of them survived.

You are now in the Churchilllaan, one of the main roads of Plan Zuid. It's a wide road with a lot of traffic, on either sides you can see houses in 'Amsterdamse school' style architecture. Next to you is the first of two statues in the green zone in the middle of this street. Walk all the way down this street to waypoint D. On your way you wil find the second statue, you can then answer the next question:

Waypoint D: N 52° 20.855 - E004° 53.139
You are now on Muzenplein. This small sculpture garden is a nice quiet place in the busy city. It overlooks a crossing of canals. There are sculptures of children with animals here, made by different artists.
How many of these sculptures are there? (Count only the sculptures downstairs.) The answer is D.

Waypoint E: N 52° 20.964 - E004° 52.772 Primary school 'De Wielewaal' was founded in 1927. It was the first public Montessori school in Amsterdam. In front of the school you will find a statue "aan Maria Montessori".

Waypoint H: N 52° 20.632 - E004° 51.397
You are now on the Stadionplein. You are between two Citroën garages and in front of you is the Olympic Stadium, all these buildings were designed by architect Jan Wils. The stadium wouldn't be here without the help of the Dutch citizens. Two years before the Olympic Games in Amsterdam, the city counsel wanted to cancel the whole thing, it was too expensive. Spontaniously citizens raised money and the stadium was build. It was a huge succes, the stadium was used many times after the Games and was even expanded with a second ring of stands. Footballclub Ajax played many of it's European Cup matches here, but after Ajax got it's new stadium, the Amsterdam Arena, in 1996, the old Olympic Stadium was redundant and out of date. The city counsil wanted to demolish the stadium. Again citizens protested and raised money, so the stadium could be renovated. The second ring was removed again and the stadium was brought back to it's original design. In 2000 the stadium was reopened, it's now being used mostly for athletics.
In what year were the Olympic Games in Amsterdam? Take the third digit of this year, this is H.
