There was a unique 0-10-0 engine nick-named Big Bertha. She had big
buffers, as well as being the only British steam locomotive at the
time to carry a large electric searchlight at the front. Train
crews used to delight in spoiling the chances of 'courting couples'
canoodling by the line side by turning the light onto them! She had
ten driving wheels for maximum grip and spent her life 'banking'
trains over Lickey Incline. Trains are still caused problems by
Lickey Incline, which is remarkable for its two miles of 1:37
gradient, the steepest continuous section of track on any of
Britain’s main lines. Today's solution is more mundane - stick
another loco on the back. 1:37 might not sound steep to a road
user, but remember, trains only have steel wheels not rubber tyres.
50 years ago June 9,1956 It was announced that locomotive Big
Bertha was to be sent away to Derby to be scrapped. Big Bertha had
spent 36 years travelling up and down the Lickey incline, covering
a total of 838,856 miles. Parking for a couple of cars in Pikes
Pool Lane. Possibility of livestock and thistles.
