Cesta do podsvetí vedla pres reku Acheron (podle Vergilia reku Styx), pres kterou zesnulé duše prevážel do podsvetí prevozník Charon. Tela zemrelých byla pohrbívána s mincí pod jazykem, aby mrtvý mohl zaplatit za prevoz poplatek – obolus. Ten, kdo by nezaplatil, nemohl by nikdy prekrocit reku a dostat se do podsvetí.
Nejvzdalenejsi planeta slunecní soustavy dostala po svém objevení jméno Pluto práve podle boha podsvetí a po objevu jejího nejvetšího mesíce byl tento symbolicky pojmenován Charon. Díky nezvyklé podobnosti ve velikosti obou teles bývají považovány Pluto a Charon za dvojplanetu. Možná víte, že v lednu 2006 byla pro pruzkum Pluta a Charonu vypuštena sonda New Horizons.
