This is one of a series of caches along one of the more scenic
trails in the South Bay. The trail is the Rhus Ridge trail to the
top of Black Mountain. Park in the Rhus Ridge parking lot at
N37o 21.121' W122o 8.273'. This is a small
lot on Rhus Ridge Road, just off Moody Road behind Foothill
College. It is best to come here very early in the morning, since
this is a popular running and hiking trail, which means the lot is
usually full by noon. If you started at the Rhus Ridge parking lot,
you hiked about 5 miles and accumulated 2450 feet of elevation gain
from the gate at the parking lot WP01 (450 ft MSL) and the gate at
the top, WP03 (2760 ft MSL - there is a dip between the knoll and
the upper gate that you have to regain). But it’s all downhill on
the 5 mile return to the parking lot.
In the section of trail between Bla’gard’s Ruse 6 - Snake Crossing
and this cache, you will usually see many cottontail rabbits and
the occasional bobcat. The local bobcat pair have lived in this
area for over 10 years and produced several litters of kits during
that time.
There are a number of caches nearby in Monte Bello Open Space
Reserve, including one nearly on the summit of Black Mountain
itself.
Note that the closing time for the Open Space is one half hour
after sunset.
