Lone Pine Club Dartmoor Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

PurplePenguin: I called by on my way to Cornwall but despite coming dressed in an old thornproof coat and gloves and 15 minutes on my hands and knees staring down holes, I was unable to find either of the cache boxes. I could see several Christmas baubles, which have been used to decorate the tree by someone in past years. I could only reach one, which I retrieved to throw away at home. The pine tree has grown considerably in the last 10 or so years and it has grown out as much as it has grown upwards, making it very difficult to search for a cache. Therefore I have decided to archive it. I wish the lone pine tree well in its life in this exposed spot.

Geocache Description:

Some questions to answer and then a short walk across the moor.

This cache is a tribute to my favourite children’s author – Malcolm Saville - and his Lone Pine Club Series of novels. There is nothing at the above co-ordinates and you will not find any answers to the questions there. The co-ordinates above are for the entrance to the Prince Hall Hotel, which features as King’s Holt in the 2 stories set on Dartmoor. The cache is located within 5 miles of the co-ordinates above.

You will need to find the answers to the questions below to work out the co-ordinates of the actual cache, which is a small lock‘n’lock plastic container, with room for a few small swaps. The Lone Piners own logbook was kept in an old sardine tin, but I thought that wouldn’t be very waterproof!

Most of the Lone Pine books are set in the Shropshire hills around Clun, Onibury, the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd or in Rye in East Sussex. Only 2 of them are set in Dartmoor. I’m sure the Lone Piners in the stories – David, Peter, Dickie, Mary, Jenny, Tom, Penny, Jon, Harriet and Macbeth the Scottie dog - would have loved geocaching. You don’t need to have read the books to work out the answers but it might help. If you are interested and ever go caching in Shropshire, there is another Lone Pine Cache – GCNWDT WW2 Series – The Lone Pine Club by the Time Lord.

I recommend that you take a pair of gardening gloves with you
