No extremo da língua de areia conhecida como Praia da Rocha, esta fortificação representou, em conjunto com o Forte de São João de Arade, do outro lado do rio (em Ferragudo), a defesa da cidade e do porto de Portimão.
Construida originalmente nos séculos XVII/XVIII, no seu interior existe uma pequena ermida dedicada a Santa Catarina de Alexandria. Hoje, apesar de um bocado degradada, é um espaço aberto e aprazível, que convida a desfrutar a paisagem tranquila do mar e da praia. No local decorrem algumas obras que, esperamos, devolverão a esta magnifico local o brilho de outrora.
Á direita estende-se o magnifico areal da Praia da Rocha, uma das mais conhecidas praias do Algarve e que dispensa apresentações. A praia foi alvo de recentes melhoramentos, nomeadamente a renovação de todos os restaurantes de praia e a construção de um passeio em madeira que se estende a todo o comprimento da praia convidando a um passeio á beira mar.
Em frente, o "Molhe", local por excelência para tentar a sorte na pesca e que aconselhamos a percorrer até ao seu limite pois é passeio muito agradável.
À esquerda, a Marina de Portimão, local de lazer por excelência onde além das infraestruturas de apoio á navegação de recreio podemos encontrar várias lojas, restaurantes e bares entre outras actividades.
Do outro lado do rio podemos avistar o Forte de São João e Ferragudo onde em breve irá ser construida a Marina de Ferragudo. Nas noites quentes de Verão, a Lua "põe o mar de prata", num deslumbrante jogo de luz e sombra, dando-lhe um encanto particularmente romântico...
Apesar de o terreno ser muito fácil não é possível chegar até ao local da cache com cadeiras de rodas e carrinhos de bébé. No local vão perceber porquê. No entanto podem chegar muito perto.
In the extremity of the beach known as Praia da Rocha, this fortress, together with the Fort of São João (on the other side of the river) represented the defense of the city and the port of Portimão.
Build originally XVII/XVIII centuries, in its interior exists small chapell dedicated to Santa Catarina of Alexandria. Today, although a bit degraded, its an open and pleasant space, that invites you to relax and enjoy the sea and beach landscape .
In the place there are some construction works that, we hope, will return to this place the brightness of some years ago.
To the right you can see the magnificent sands of Praia da Rocha, one of the most known beaches of the Algarve. Recently, there were made some improvements in the beach. The renewal of all the beach restaurants and the construction of a wood stroll that extends to the length of the beach inviting to a stroll at the sea side.
In front, the “Pier”, place par excellence to try your luck in fishing. We advise you to walk to it´s limit. Its a very pleasant stroll.
To the left, the Marina of Portimão, place of leisure par excellence where beyond the infrastructures that support recreation navigation we can find some stores, restaurants and bars among others activities.
On the other side of the river we can sight the Fort of São João and Ferragudo where soon it will be build the Ferragudo Marina.
In the hot nights of Summer, the Moon “puts the silver sea”, in a flaring game of light and shade, giving to it a particularly romantic enchantment…
The terrain is very easy but you can´t take wheelchairs and strollers to the exact place of the cache. At the spot you will see why. But, they can get very close.
