Geocache Description:

*** The cache is not at the posted coordinates *** Please don't compromise the cache when you're looking for it. I'm looking for a better place as the cache has been exposed after I have relocated it.

Daniel NEWNAN, a Representative from Georgia, born in Salisbury, Rowan County, N.C. about 1780. He completed preparatory studies and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1796 and 1797.

He was commissioned ensign and second lieutenant in the Fourth United States Infantry, March 3, 1799. Then promoted to first lieutenant the following November and resigned January 1, 1801. He engaged in planting and commanded the Georgia Volunteers as colonel of militia in two actions with the East Florida Indians in September and October, 1812, in the Creek War 1812-1814. He was conspicuous in an attack on the Autossee towns of the Creek Indians under General John Floyd, 29 November, 1813, and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel the following month. He was severely wounded in an engagement with the Creeks at Camp Defiance under the same commanding officer, 27 January, 1814.

After the cessation of hostilities General Newnan resided on his plantation in McDonough, Henry County, Georgia. He was made Brigadier General in November 1813 and inspector-general of the third division of state militia.

In January 1814, he was given vote of thanks by the General Assembly of the State of Georgia for the courage, patriotism and fortitude manifested in his service against the Creek Indians.

In 1817 he was commission as Major General of the State Militia.

He was the superintendent of the State penitentiary in 1823-1825.

In 1825 he was elected to the office of Secretary of State of Georgia and then elected to the U.S. Congress, serving from March 1831 to March 1833.

General Newnan died in Walker County, Georgia, on January 16, 1851 and is buried at Newnan Springs near Rossville, Georgia.

To find the cache you will need to find the“Key to the City” TB. It will have the coordinates and the key you will need to open the cache.

To open the cache simply rotate the key 3 turns, then turn the top of the cache an inch and then lift it straight up. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING! When locking the cache please do not over tighten the lid with the key, just get it snug.
