The turn off to the recreation area is located at milepost 277.8
of the Richardson Highway. The road started out as a mushing trail
used by Native Alaskans and trappers to move between Healy and
other parts of Interior Alaska. An Alaska State Parks parking fee
of $5 is required.
Cachers may approach the cache via a 0.6 mile walk on an easy
trail that starts to the left of the boat launch, via boat, or on
skis or snowshoes in the winter. A map of the local trails is
available here.
The featured attractions for this cache are Glatfelder's Cabin and
a great view of Quartz Lake. Mr. Glatfelder was living in
Sacramento, California, when he picked out a blue spot on a map of
interior Alaska and decided to homestead there. That blue spot is
Quartz Lake, and he lived on five acres beginning in the 1950s. He
eventually returned to California and his cabin was rebuilt in 1998
and 1999 to be used as a public use cabin.
Many thanks to Yellowdawg for taking on the
challenge of relocating the cache for us after we'd cleared the
coordinates from our GPS while loading a new pocket query.
Yellowdawg went out with a photo and coordinates we pulled from
our track log and found the cache to score the prepublished FTF
on the same day they found the nearby Bluff Point cache. We are grateful
for their willingness to take on the challenge and return with a
set of accurate coordinates.
