Geocache Description:

Molechunkamunk, a.k.a. Upper Richardson Lake, lies within an unspoiled wilderness, rich in history, folk lore and wildlife. This cache is part of a series designed to share with you, some very special locations we have treasured in our lifetime (thus far), on and around this open space treasure we love so much.

“Pincushion” is a cliff-like granite outcropping offering breathtaking views of Upper Dam, Mooslookmeguntic and Richardson Lakes and the mountains beyond. Its name dates back to early post-logging days when it was clearly visible from below and dotted with young stubble spruce, thereby given the appearance of a giant pincushion. The area has since been reclaimed by the forest, but shortly after the state’s receivership of the land, the trail was improved, the site cleared and a crude bench installed from which one can relax and enjoy the panoramic vista.

Access to Upper Richardson Lake is available at the state maintained boat launch at Millbrook (N 44*54.408 W 070*54.422). The entrance is off of Rt.16 and marked by the “Bureau of Public Lands/Richardson Lake Unit” sign

This is a multi-cache with part one simply bringing you to the trail head. That is important enough to repeat… “trail head”. Bring your hiking boots, or at least socks and sneakers. The trip from Millbrook to the trail head via water is roughly 1.25 miles and possibly twice that if you hike the shoreline. Once there you will find a camouflaged container holding the coordinates to the cache. The trail head is defined by the “international” hiker signs put in place by the state. The hike to the cache is .75 miles with a total ascent of nearly 400 feet. (If you are slow at math… that equates to a huff and puff). The view is well worth the effort and your rewards at the top are waiting… the delight in knowing that it’s all downhill from there, a fantastic view, blueberries in season and a 30 MM ammo can full of neat stuff. Please use the camera to record your visit and leave it behind for the next visitors. We will upload the best images to the cache page. Let us know when it gets low on shots.

Both parts of this multi should be quite easy to find. Getting to them is your challenge. Couch potatoes BEWARE! Everyone please beware that Upper Richardson Lake pays no attention to the weatherman. It creates its own. Be mindful of that and know your limitations. If you do this as your only “Molechunkamunk” cache for the day from Millbrook, your paddle will be about 2.5 miles round trip. Consider adding another to broaden the experience. Cachers who accomplish both “Cranberry Cove” and “Pin Cushion” on the same day will be formally recognized on both cache pages in the “Paddlehikers Wall of Fame”, and will undoubtedly sleep well that night. Be sure to claim “Molechunkamunk: Millbrook”, the warm-up micro while you’re at it.

One last thing. Maintenance of this cache, as well as accessibility to it will be very limited from approximately Thanksgiving though ice-out. Travel bugs are encouraged in the cache, but those left too late in the season may spend the winter. Have fun. Respect Mother Nature. Tell us about your adventure. Enjoy!
