Geocache Description:

Log book only, BYO pen, micro, hidden in the centre of Palmerston North. One cannot overemphasise that the real challenge here is to avoid the suspicion of the incessant pedestrian muggles traversing the area and those enjoying the hospitality of nearby cafe. Please consider doing this cache either earlier or later in the day.

This cache has been persistently muggled, so please proceed with the cunning and stealth that it deserves. Thank you.

PLEASE take care, and find and re-hide stealthily.

This cache hunt will lead you to the centre of Palmerston North city. An often underrated inland provincial city, Palmerston North has a population of around 70,000 people. Many of the good souls who live here are engaged in servicing the extensive farming activity that abounds in the surrounding Manawatu, Horowhenua, Rangitikei and Wanganui districts.

Less than 2 hours drive from Wellington, Palmerston North is noted for: tertiary education, the home of Massey University, UCOL and IPC; windpower generated electricity, with windfarms at Te Apiti and the northern Tararuas; producing great beef to eat; access to some great trout fishing rivers and tramping in the Ruahine and Tararua ranges.

Apart from bringing you to the centre of our fair city, this cache is also an opportunity to mark the 100th year anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone for the nearby Grand Hotel on the 19th of May 1906. Less auspiciously, the cache will lend you a view of the Palmerston North City Council building. A view you may not want to borrow! Locally the building is referred to as the Battleship and you'll probably get to see why.

Do soak up the atmosphere of our much improved square and take some time to wander round and enjoy the sights. You may want to combine this cache with the Turtle's 'Somewhat by design' multi-cache that takes you on a tour of the square and surrounds.

You will find the cache in an area of the square titled Te Marae O Hine, translated to mean the courtyard of the daughter of peace. Most likely, when you've found the spot, you'll want to rest and take a seat.
