Enjoy the history in this Charlton cemetery. A little math to find the container. CACHE IS NOT IN HISTORIC STONE WALL. The grave is also a waymark (WM45W2) that can be logged. There is a letterbox here too.

To find the cache:

If you can't read the headstone, find a photo online to read. Scroll to bottom for Solution Checker.

Per his headstone, how old was John Adams when he died? Let X be the last digit of his age.
To the posted north coordinates, subtract .00X.

Per his headstone, what date in October did John die? Subtract 10 from the date, and let's call that YY.
To the posted west coordinates, subtract .0YY

Cache is hidden well. Please rehide well. USE CAUTION LOOKING FOR FINAL. There could be some old barbed wire on the ground & buried under leaves. NOT IN HISTORIC STONE WALL. That is a letterbox - not the geocache you seek. Please do not remove any stones!

We give sincere thanks to the Baker family for generously agreeing to share their land with geocachers. You may notice “no trespassing” signs posted. They are there to keep hunters off the property, but the Baker family was happy to see this land used for the benefit of the community for geocaching. Much gratitude to you!

Grizzly Adams’ Grave

P.T. Barnum (of the circus) commissioned his headstone.

"Grizzly" Adams and friends, probably during his engagement with P.T. Barnum.

The History of Grizzly Adams:

Grizzly Adams, John Capen Adams
Who was he? He was a Western Frontiersman who became a professional hunter of grizzly bears to supply early California restaurants. Many historians credit him as the largest single factor in the extinction of the California grizzly bear. He had a natural ability to tame and train cubs, of which he always kept a few trained bears with him as pets. These pets would accompany him on bear hunting expeditions and were used to help find other bears. He took some of his trained bears and traveled with the P.T. Barnum Circus.

Transcript of 1856 first hand account of his life can be downloaded here in various forms. For whatever reason, he used his brother's first name of James, and not John. The Adventures of James Capen Adams.

The popular 1977-1978 television series plot had a different flavor: An innocent fugitive from the law lives in the wilderness with a grizzly bear companion and helps passers-by in the forest.

Fans of “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams” Television series describe John Capen Adams like this:

“Back in the 1850’s, a man named James Adams became a legend. He was a gentle man who was forced to leave civilization behind and journey deeper into the wilderness than any white man had ever been. And though he was alone and hungry, with little hope for his own survival, he risked his life to save an orphaned bear cub.

Throughout the television series, we discovered how this man and the bear cub, with no knowledge of the wilderness, faced danger together. How they survived. And how the bear repaid the man’s kindness. We discovered how he learned to live in harmony with the animals of the forest. How he became an important part of the wilderness and how he protected and worked with the animals in his valley. He was a special man, with an incredible ability to make friends with wild animals. He was Grizzly Adams.”

In 2016, I discovered that a new film & TV series may be in the works. Based more on fact than the 1970s series. Follow along here or on their Facebook page. The Real Grizzly Adams
