“A Caneta ou a Tábua?”

A Decisão é tua! Ou te alistas nos piratas, assinando no caderno de
bordo, ou percorres a tábua… e olha que lá em baixo espera-te o
crocodilo esfomeado, cuja última refeição foi a mão do Capitão
Gancho e… um relógio despertador!
Depois de
percorrer um trilho povoado por personagens da nossa infância,
viste cair no meio dos temíveis piratas! É que esta pequena praia
(praia da Grota), e as seguintes, escondidas pelas enseadas, foram
locais usados, em tempos, por “piratas terrestres”, que aguardavam
aqui a passagem dos navios carregados de riquezas a caminho de
Lisboa, para os atrair com fogueiras que simulavam a aproximação à
capital! Estes piratas matreiros esperavam que os navios
encalhassem nas rochas para os pilharem logo de seguida! Repara na
vista: aqui de cima vê-se tudo! Não era fácil escapar-lhes! Ainda
hoje, se diz, que os habitantes desta zona (Malveira) são
desonestos por serem descendentes de piratas… mas isso são
histórias… ou talvez não! ;)
Enquanto o Peter Pan e
a Sininho não aparecem para te ajudar, engana o Capitão
Gancho: assina o livro de bordo (log book) e tira uma foto
com o lenço de pirata, para que ele acredite que te queres
mesmo alistar!

“The pen or the plank?” – asks Captain Hook.
It’s your call! You will either join the pirates’ fleet, signing in
the pirates’ book, or walk the plank… and down there, there is a
hungry crocodile, whose last meal was Captain Hook’s hand and… an
alarm clock!
After a small hike, that has given you the
chance to revisit characters of our childhood, you’ve ended
up in a pirates nest! I mean: this beach (Grota beach), and
the following ones, hidden within the coves, were used, a
long time ago, by “land pirates”, who would wait in here for
the vessels to pass by, filled with precious loads, on their
way to the Lisbon harbour. The pirates would draw the
vessels’ attention with bonfires on the beach, making it look
like they were arriving to the capital city. The vessels
would then hit against the rocks and the snicky pirates would
jump right on, stealing everything! Have you noticed the
incredible view? You can see everything from up here! It was
impossible to escape them!
Nowadays, people still say that the villagers of Malveira (the next
village) are dishonest because they descend from the land pirates…
but that’s a legend… or maybe not! ;)
While Peter Pan
and Tinker Bell are on their way to help you, you better buy
yourself some extra time fooling Captain Hook: sign the pirates’
book (log book) and take a picture of you, wearing the pirates’
scarf, so he may believe you are really thinking of joining his
fleet.

- Mantém-te sempre no trilho, com atenção. A
vegetação esconde buracos e ravinas!
- Não te aproximes demasiado da falésia para ver
a cascata! O piso aí é muito escorregadio! Se quiseres ir até à
praia, o melhor caminho é pelo lado Sul. O acesso pela cascata é
perigoso.
- Quando chove mais, o caudal da ribeira aumenta
e pode tornar a passagem sobre a cascata perigosa. Muito
cuidado!
- No Verão: leva bastante água, chapéu, e calçado
confortável e aderente.
- No Inverno: leva um corta-vento e calçado
confortável e aderente.
A Cache
Está num local com uma vista magnífica sobre a praia da Grota. Esta
praia “secreta” é muito apreciada pelos amantes de caminhadas. Tem
uma cascata de água doce, que termina quase sobre o mar, e que
permite que algumas plantas de zonas ripícolas (margens de rios)
cresçam praticamente sobre a areia!

Recommendations:
- Keep in the trail, and pay attention. Dense
vegetation hides holes and reefs!
- Don’t approach the reef too much to see the
waterfall. The ground is extremely slippery! If you want to get to
the beach, the best way is approaching it from the South. Access
via the waterfall is dangerous.
- After strong rain, there’s much more water in
the water stream leading to the waterfall. Passing over the water
stream might become more dangerous. Be very careful!
- In Summer: take plenty of drinking water, a
hat, and comfortable hiking shoes.
- In Winter: take a light jacket to protect from
strong wind and comfortable hiking shoes.
The cache
The cache location has a magnificent view over the Grota beach.
This “secret” beach is appreciated by hike-lovers. It has a
waterfall that leads the fresh water to the sea. Because of
this, typical plants of river
margins grow up in the sand, between the sea and the base of the
waterfall!
