It used to be a common sight, when traveling the back roads of southern Wisconsin, to see beef cattle out grazing in a pasture. Now more and more beef farms are being replaced by houses, horses, and hops (well, ok, its really corn and soybeans), and the old barns stand empty. This series highlights six beef breeds you may still see as you're traveling about hunting caches.
The Herd
Beefies - The Herd doesn't highlight a breed, but rather the most common type of beef cow out there - the crossbred. Many herds consist of crossbred cattle, the combination of two or more breeds in the hopes of getting the best traits of each breed and to increase hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor is the phenomenon in which the performance of the offspring is greater than the average of the parents. The more distantly related the parents are, the greater is the hybrid vigor of their offspring. In beef cattle this means often crossing British Breeds with Continental breeds, such as a Simmental/Angus cross. These are often black beefies with odd white markings on their face, patches around the eyes, or white faces that aren't white all the way to the neck. Another common cross in this area is the Hereford/Angus cross, which results in a 'Black Baldy', an animal with the white face of a Hereford but the black body of the Angus.
This is located on public hunting land. Please hunt this cache after 2:00 pm during Pheasant season (Oct. 20 - Dec. 31, 2007), and its always safest to wear blaze orange.

The caches in this series vary in terrain and difficulty, but most caches are .50 cal ammo cans. This one is a medium sized lock n lock. This wildlife area has some low, swampy areas, so you may want to bring along an extra pair of socks and shoes, just in case you step in the wrong spot.
