Geocache Description:

The idea for this cache was inspired by / stolen shamelessly from* the London urban caches, created by Perthos.

*delete as applicable.

The cache is located on the framework of the old Swansea Slip Bridge. Built in 1914, this bridge spanned the old railway line (now Oystermouth Road) near the Guildhall. In Victorian times, this part of the beach was very popular, and the bridge’s stone arches housed shops selling seaside ‘consumables’. However, in 2004, after decades of neglect, the bridge had to be removed due to its poor state of repair.

Whilst the ‘truss’ sat in the Brynmill Recreation Ground, there followed several months of debate over its future: unfortunately the excessive cost of repair could not be justified, leaving two choices – scrap it or re-site it.

Opinion was split over what to do, but in the end, those calling for the preservation of Swansea’s heritage won out. The recently repainted iron truss now spans the seafront cycle and pedestrian route, close to St Helens rugby ground. The stone steps, where the bridge used to stand, can still be seen further along the promenade.

The cache

I understand that not everyone enjoys finding micros – if that is the case for you, then you may not want to bother with this one, as it is tiny! It therefore contains a log book only – no pen or swops. The container is a camouflaged to match its surroundings. It is located on the bridge itself, attached by magnets.

Please note that this is deliberately intended to be a different type of challenge to other caches in the area. This is in a 'muggle-rich' area, and discretion will be needed. Kids may not enjoy finding it, as there are no swops. Also, I have to admit that when we first started Geocaching, we didn't find this type of hide to be interesting - we were more interested in visiting out-of-the-way areas and finding nice big containers. However, although we still very much enjoy finding containers up in the mountains, in the woods, etc., after visiting London, we now also think there is a certain satisfaction in finding a cache hidden right under the nose of so many passers-by. We hope that you will enjoy it too. If the response is positive, we may place some more. If not - well, at least we gave it a try!

Because I think it will be difficult to find, the decrypted clue gives a detailed description of the location.

And remember - you will need to bring a pen!
