Geocache Description:

The cache can be located close to Belfast at the Berg-en-Dal National Monument.

This is the site of the last traditional battle between the British and the Boers during the South African War. The battle raged between 21 and 27 August 1900. The Boers lost this battle and started with their famous guerilla tactics afterwards.

Apparently this was one of the battles that made the British officials realise that their artillery wasn't as effective as they thought, and they spent millions of pounds after the South African War to develop new and more effective weapons. By the time the First World War (in 1914) started the British Army had some of the best weapons available at that stage, and that fact helped them to victory in WW1.

Make sure not to miss the monument erected in honour of the British soldiers that died in this battle. This monument is easy to miss next to the Boer Monument.

When looking for this cache try to imagine the battle that took place at this exact spot more than 100 years ago. What an eerie feeling to realise that people shed their blood for their believes and respective countries on this very same spot! It is so much more than just history.
