Geocache Description:

A quick "cache and dash" micro dedicated to the crews of the 457th Bomb Group, US 8th Air Force - The Mighty 8th.

This cache is located close to the western edge of the former wartime USAF base at Conington, close to the original water tower, which still stands today. Nearby is a very impressive black granite memorial stone, dedicated to the men who never returned.
Although actually located at Conington, the airbase was named "Glatton" after a village a few miles to the west to avoid confusion with the existing airbases at Honington and Coningsby.

The cache is in a suitably labelled 35mm film container and is (hopefully) quite cunningly concealed. The container contains a small log book and pencil, although you might want to bring your own pen, as writing with a one-inch pencil is never easy!
It lies close to a footpath along the B1043 road, and parking for a couple of cars can be found immediately after turning into the side road towards Conington village, next to the memorial.
When hunting the cache, please keep an eye out for any approaching traffic.

Visitors using the A1 ideally need to turn off at Jcn 16 (from the north) and Jcn 15 (from the south) and follow the signs towards Holme/Conington (B1043).

For those interested, an older memorial to the 457th Bomb Group exists at the nearby church in Conington village (just under a mile away) and some sections of the old runways can still be seen from the road between there and Holme village (although on private land).

Happy hunting!
