Geocache Description:

Another in the Epsom Common series. This one is best suited as the last cache of the day. Save it until dusk and enjoy the views towards the setting sun.

This cache is located on Epsom Common. Cache site is off main bridleways and footpaths. The area can be quite muddy and will be more overgrown during the summer months. Also, during the summer months, cattle will be grazing in the area, so dogs will need to be kept on a lead.

Cache is a tupperware type box of clear plastic with official cache sticker on the lid. Contains log book and various goodies! Free car parking is available off Christchurch Road in the Stew Ponds car park. Note- This car park closes at dusk.

The common covers 435 acres and has a 4.8km hard surface, all weather track. Epsom Common was once the waste of the Manor of Epsom and was only used as common, rough grazing by the local people. The woodland areas of the common consist of mainly of Oak and Birch trees and there are a number of old Oak Pollards. There are four large ponds on the common. The most well known being the 'Stew Pond'. Stew Pond is a medieval name for an enclosure of carp for the manorial table.

The common is recognised as important for wildlife. Some of the wildlife you may see on your trek include birds such as Woodcock;Heron;Sparrowhawk;Parakeet and larger animals such as foxes, hedgehogs, muddy dogs (!) and Roe Deer.

NB: - Rangers/local council have put an electric fence around the area of the cache, pending arrival of cattle in late May. There is a wooden gate/style towards the northeast which seems to be the only way over the fence. Persevre!

As ever, take care near the fence and cattle! Make sure that children and dogs are kept under control or on leads. If at all in doubt, LEAVE UNTIL THE WINTER when the cattle are moved.
