Geocache Description:

Located at low level alongside small river, and easy walk from Avebury (pay £7.00 Summer or £3.00 Winter and dryest route) or Silbury (free and wettest route), West Kennet Long Barrow (free and muddiest route) car parks. The latter two are on the A4 between Calne and Marlborough.

Please visit the link below to see the National Trust pages about Avebury and its surroundings.

Thanks to the National Trust property Manager at Avebury for allowing this 'physical' cache to be placed.
As an additional reminder to all seeking this cache, it is most definately NOT buried (this was one of the concerns raised by the World Heritage site co-ordinator, and I have confirmed the fact that it, and UK cache's are NOT buried which is why the cache placement has been permited to go ahead). Please note that there is NO need to cross/climb ANY barbed wire fencing in area to reach cache.
The original cache disappeared during the storms in mid-January 2007 and I can only assume that it made its way into the swollen nearby River Kennet to turn itself into a wandering cache, and is making its way downstream to who knows where! However an edition 2 cache has been placed in the original location along with its new camoflage, which I hope will last longer than the originals 18 months or so.

Avebury, Silbury and the surrounding ancient sites draw many people to it. It has spititual significance to various groups, who are welcome visitors on a regular basis.
On the day of the last total eclipse to be visible at Avebury, the site was absolutely packed with spectators and visitors (even though the eclipse was shrouded by heavy cloud cover).
This physical cache involves a fairly short walk from recognised car parks that have been already designated for nearby virtual caches and allows for different views of those locations. It takes you along a stretch of the very young River Kennet.
I hope that this cache may be used as a focal point to for the virtual caches, so those visiting will be able to enjoy the physical cacheing side of things too, especially if they forget a camera.
I have to add, that as this is an area frequented by muggles galore, you may have more enjoyment in avoiding their gaze whilst enjoying the contents of the cache.
Hopefully those looking for the cache will enjoy the walk, the views, the wildlife and the location.
Please also be aware that when the nettle season is on, that the location can become nettle bound, but when they recede, the hiding place becomes more accessible, so in the summer months you may need full body protection, as what is an open area during the winter months, becomes a veritable jungle during the summer months, and can also obscure the preferred way to the cache.
