Geocache Description:

Accessable from outside the State Recreation area. See below for more information.

The cache is a plastic fruit jar with a green lid. Normal cache goodies are inside. This one has a few more items for geo-kids over the contents of "Burrendong Gates".

Access to the site is the hard bit as the "Lion" refers to Lion Island (when the dam is more than half full it becomes an island - in March 2006 it was less than 40% full).

A long, long hike in from the east (Mudgee side) is one option, but only with the tide out. For the keen geo-triathletes, there is the option of a (Bike,) Swim (approx. 300 odd metres), Run/hike in from the west. Just watch the boating traffic if you are swimming !

A short walk uphill from a boat over a loose shale base with fallen timber is the easiest and probably the suggested way in. Unless you have access to your own watercraft (driftwood counts), you may have to con a fishing or ski boat "capitaine" to drop you off. Offering to contribute to the fuel costs of boating will almost certainly secure passage. It's a good way to meet the boating public of Burrendong and a way of telling others about our crazy sport. By the way, make sure you negotiate the return leg at the same time so you can get home.
