Geocache Description:

A multicache on Middletown's Mt. Higby.

** Stage 1 at N41 31.899 W72 44.624 ** This journey is part of a cache series commemorating the travels of Leatherman in the late 1800s. Leatherman once roamed SW Connecticut and SE New York from 1858 to 1889. He traveled a 365-mile loop between the Connecticut and Hudson rivers. Approximately every month he would repeat his journey. The man spoke primarily with grunts or gestures and dressed in crudely stitched leather from his hat to his shoes. The suit was made of heavy pieces of raw leather weighing more than sixty pounds. He would sleep outside year-round mostly in caves around Connecticut and New York. More information on Leatherman can be found at http://www.skyweb.net/~channy/leatherman.html. This cache takes you to Mt. Higby, one of my favorite places. Use caution along the trail due to steep drop/cliffs. There are three stages to the cache - two small canisters and one small lock n' lock container. Park at N 41 31.835 W 072 44.386, right off of Rt. 66 near the Middletown/Meriden line. Please stay on the blue trail at first - you don't want to wander onto water company property. Some stages may require bushwhacking later. The final is about 0.7 miles from parking, as the crow flies. You probably can't fly, though, so it'll be a bit longer hike than that. ** It looks like a modern day Leatherman has set up a camp with lean-too by the final. ** Happy hunting! FM P.S. While you're up on the mountain, be sure to visit The Higby Hobble and the Higby Hide Travel Bug Hotel.
