Geocache Description:

A traditional cache, located on the rocky peninsula that projects into the sea at the south-east tip of Attica.A medium level difficulty cache at the hill close to the temple of Poseidon.

The cache is a plastic container with a log book, a pen, a pencil, a geocaching declaration in Greek and in English and some goodies to trade.
The peninsula of Sounion was inhabited from the prehistoric period and there seems to have been some form of cult there in Mycenean times, since Homer is the first to describe Sounion as "sacred".He relates that on the journey back from Troy, Menelaus buried his steersman Phrontis here. The excavations at the beginning of the century revealed that there was an organised sanctuary here already in the Geometric period (10th-7th c. BC), and some of the earliest kouroi of Greek art were erected in the open-air sanctuary of Poseidon in the early 6th c.BC.The construction of the temple of Poseidon and the propylon leading to it began in the early 5th c. BC.The temple of the ancient god of the sea, was built on the summit of the rock, which rises 60m above the sea and is surrounded by stout walls.
This place nowadays, is famous for its sunsets. If you are a tourist in Greece, probably they will show you this place at some time near the sunset.
