Geocache Description:

The cache is at the top of Rainbow Mountain (Maungakakaramea). Your mission is to walk up to Geodetic Survey Mark 3081 by the fire lookout station, at an altitude of 743m ASL. The sign says - "1 1/2 hours" as the expected trip time, and the 300m ascent is easily done in 45 minutes along what is mostly a well graded and surveyed track, that has recently been added to and upgraded to include Mountain Bike access.

It is not as severe as it sounds though. And the 360° views are to die for.

The cache originally consisted of a green 1-litre square ‘Sistema’ container. It was replaced in August 2007 with a green Ammo can with a Geocache Sticker on the side. The initial contents include: Log; Pencil & Sharpener; assorted SWAG (Balloon, NZ Pen, 'Joyful' mini playing cards, Butterfly Notepad, Spider, Small woven flax bag, Blank Phono-R CD, 2xspare zip-locks); TB (China Doll); Official Geocaching Hiking Staff Medallion (for the FTF).

****************************************
To assist you in finding the cache, the following rhyme may help, or just for a bit of fun:
Use the Geodetic Survey Mark Waypoint Coordinates to start, and ensure your GPS is set to use TRUE North.
From the Geodetic Survey Mark -
Walk past the lookout - you'll be facing South.
While you're there, have a pew and take a look at the view.
Step to your left - Nor' Nor' West - 10 metres will do.
It is there - you can bank on it!!!

Please cover again. Note that if there are muggles present, they will see you.
****************************************

Maungakakaramea is an extinct dacite volcano on the Northern edge of the Waiotapu area. It has significance in botanical and scientific terms as it contains complex mixtures of plant species - some of which are unique in geothermal areas. See Destination Outdoors for additional information about this area.

One of NZ's largest native grasses, Cortaderia fulvida, aka toetoe, is seen growing at the summit. Usually it only grows from sea level up to about 600 metres altitude. It can grow up to 3 metres high.

This site has wonderful 360 degree views. A map could be handy if you want to identify the multitude of visible lakes and volcanic features of this area.

For a map and yet more information, see pages 36-38 of Rotorua Walking Tracks.

UPDATE: November 2007 - Vehicle access to this cache is now prohibited due to vandalism of the fire watch tower and aerials at the summit.
