There are a choice of routes to the cache area, all of which are
along well defined paths. Those with a sensitive sense of smell
might wish to avoid the route which takes you past the location
where scallop shells are tipped into the sea (54 13.301 4
42.352)
Once you reach the cache area you will need to wander off the
footpath and follow the sheep tracks for a short distance. The
cache can be accessed quite safely without the need to take any
risks.
Contrary Head derives it name from being the spot where the
contrary tidal currents running north and south meet. Perhaps this
is why it is such a suitable place during the summer months to
watch for basking sharks.
You should be lucky enough to have ravens and choughs for company
at any time of year. Both species of birds seem to delight in their
ability to fly, and both are capable of some dramatic flight
displays.
The cache is an ammo box, and the original contents were:
- Logbook
- Mini slinky
- Compass keyring
- Torch keyring
- AAA rechargeable batteries
- Mini radio
- Golden Reel travelbug
This
area is used by a variety of sea birds for nesting. While the cache
itself is not directly next to any nests, it is still advisable for
any cachers to make their visit to the cache as brief as possible
during nesting season so as not to disturb the birds.
