Geocache Description:

Located next to South Western Highway, Harvey.

Harvey Internment Camp Memorial Shrine
Giuseppe Raneri, an Italian Internee during World War 2, decided that he wanted to build a roadside shrine, similar to those they have in Italy. Once he got permission to do so, the Internees built the shrine using materials from within the compound (mainly sandstone and granite).

The shrine is still there to this day, although now it has been housed in small building after it was restored in 1992 by the people of Harvey.

Within the shrine's building is a lot of information about life in the camp, including photos and copies of letters and other memorabilia.

The camp contained approximately 1000 Italian men from all over Western Australia, together with at least 200 Australian Army personnel assigned to guard the Internment camp.

Very interesting place to visit and Well worth a look.
