Geocache Description:

Found only in New Zealand, a nocturnal flightless bird, the kiwi lives within a short distance of this cache.

New Zealand's favourite bird has five species - Great Spotted (roa), Little spotted, Northern Brown, Rowi And Tokoeka (Haast Tokoeka & Southern Tokoeka).

The kiwi is a nocturnal creature, has no tail, and is covered with a hair-like loosely attached feathers giving it a shaggy appearance. It differs from other birds in that its nostrils are at the tip of the bill instead of the base, and it has a well developed sense of smell.

After finding this cache, head across the road and find out more about the kiwi, and if you time it right (9am to 4.30pm any day except Christmas Day) you will be able to view the kiwi. Alternatively head along from the cache to the open area and visit the Rotary park aviaries for free.

There is not good GPS coverage under the trees, so please do read these instructions and use the hint.

After parking your vehicle, find the pathway under the arch, turn left as soon as you cross the little stream… walk a few metres along the stream then note an old pathway up the hill in the leaves on the ground. Follow this for a while, your GPS should give you an idea where the cache is.

Look at the base of a shrub around 1 metre on the right side of the old track (when heading uphill). Make sure you cover the cache well when you leave, to protect from muggles.

The original box lasted from 2006 until the end of 2014, as a kiwi themed swap cache. Unfortunately the area was cleaned up then, and the bush that allowed a 2l cache to hide disappeared, so the hide had to shrink to 400ml, with a small stock of traditional swaps.

Please hide it well after finding and cover with leaves Have fun!
