Geocache Description:

Another cache placed in the general vicinity of where I grew up!

This stretch of road was originally called Bourke St. It was surveyed in blocks for a new township around the turn of (last) century. Whilst it never grew as a town, it has been known by locals as Bourke St over the years.

This cemetery started operation in 1911 as the number of families settling in the district was increasing and the need for a local cemetery was identified. Government regulations of the time required that the grounds be divided into sections to suit the different denominations. It was decided to do this as follows: Roman Catholic in the NW quarter, Anglican in the SW quarter, and other denominations the eastern half.

This cemetery is now closed (other than for pre-purchased plots) but is maintained immaculately by the Wynyard Council. This proved to be the undoing of the original cache container which went in a drastic cleanup of the area around the original cache location. Replacement cache is a small plastic container with screw top lid. Just big enough for small logbook and teensy swaps.

New cache location is better too. For those that aren't very fond of cemetery caches (whilst still having to enter the gate) you don't need to go anywhere near the graves at all. For those that don't mind them, I think this is an interesting one to have a short wander around.
