The 'Who'd a tho't it?' was
formerly an Inn on the southern tip of Gorrick wood, off Nine Mile
Ride. Unfortunately it was flattened a few years ago to make
way for new housing.
The woods however, were apparently well noted in Victorian
times:
"Near the ‘Who'd a tho't it’ Inn, there’s a
section known as Gorrick, owned by the Forestry Commission. There
was once a well here, famous, as many others in Berkshire, for the
healing power of its water, most especially for troubling eye
disorders. The site of Gorrick Well has been preserved as an
antiquity and it is believed Elizabeth I visited the well three
times. Perhaps the strong-willed Virgin Queen needed to avail
herself of the healing water. Well, who'd a tho't it, eh?"
The well is less than a quarter of a mile NE from the cache, but
unfortunately now lies on private property after right of way
changes some years ago.
So back to the cache...
There is free parking available to the north, south and east of the
cache. It may be hard going for pushchairs but should
be OK for children.
The cache is a large ammo-box containing the usual goodies,
including a special prize for the FTF. Although satellite
reception is not great, the hiding place should be pretty obvious
once in the area. It can be a bit muddy so boots are
recommended in winter months.
You will need to approach the cache from the south to avoid
bog and crocks!
Good luck.
