La borgata di San Lorenzo (m 800) in Val Pusteria - alla confluenza
del Gadera con la Rienza - viene definita anche portale nord
occidentale delle Dolomiti sudtirolesi. Verso oriente la Val
Pusteria si apre nella conca di Brunico, con a nord la Valle
Aurina. Verso occidente dove fluisce la Rienza la valle si va
restringendo.
La presenza umana nei dintorni di San Lorenzo ha radici nei
primordi della storia. Ritrovamenti archeologici documentano la
presenza umana nell'epoca successiva le glaciazioni Würm-Riss: il
Mesolitico ancora ricco di misteri.
In epoca preistorica esisteva già un insediamento presumibilmente
nel fondo-valle e sui terrazzamenti dei pendii soleggiati, verso
Castelbadia (Sonnenburger Weinleite).
In epoca storica la località allora chiamata Sebatum dipendeva dal
municipio Claudium Aguntum nel Tirolo Orientale ed aveva, in Val
Pusteria sicuramente funzione di centro più importante.
Tale supremazia sia religiosa che secolare, presumibilmente
derivata dalla preistoria, continua poi a sussistere per tutto il
Medio-evo, con la rifondazione bavara della borgata con il nome di
San Lorenzo.

Die Marktgemeinde St. Lorenzen liegt im Pustertal, 800 m ü.d.M., am
Zusammenfluss des aus Süden kommenden Gaderbaches mit dem
Hauptfluss Rienz und wird deshalb auch als nordwestliches Tor zu
den Südtiroler Dolomiten bezeichnet. Nach Osten zu öffnet sich das
Pustertal zur Brunecker Talweite mit dem großen Tauferer-Ahrntal im
Norden. Nach Westen, wohin die Rienz entwässert, verengt sich das
Tal etwas.Die Anwesenheit der ältesten Siedler in der Gegend von
St. Lorenzen wurzelt in den tiefsten Lagen der Geschichte.
Archäologische Funde belegen menschliche Anwesenheit seit dem
gänzlich erfolgten Rückgang der Würm-Eiszeit, dem geheimnisvollen
Mesolithikum. In vorgeschichtlicher Zeit bestand dann schon eine
Siedlung, möglicherweise im Talboden und an Hangterrassen an der
südlich des Flusses Rienz gelegenen Sonnenburger Weinleite.
In der Antike dann unterstand Sebatum, wie es damals genannt wurde,
zwar dem heute im österreichischen Osttirol gelegenen Municipium
Claudium Aguntum, hatte aber sicherlich die Funktion, Hauptort des
Pustertals zu sein. Diese spirituelle und weltliche
Vormachtstellung, die möglicherweise schon aus vorgeschichtlicher
Zeit stammt, besteht dann weiter durch das ganze Mittelalter, wo
die Marktgemeinde inzwischen als bajuwarische Neugründung in St.
Lorenzen umbenannt ist.

The market-town of St Lorenzen is situated in the Pustertal, 800 m
above sea level, at the confluence of
the River Gader coming from the south and the main River Rienz, and
is therefore also called Northwestern Gate to the South Tyrolean
Dolomites. To the east the Pustertal opens to the Bruneck Basin
with the large Valley of the River Ahrn to the north. To the west,
whereto the River Rienz flows, the valley narrows a bit.
Human presence in the area of St Lorenzen roots in the deepest
layers of history. Archaeological findings prove human presence
since the complete withdrawal of the Alpine Würm-Riß ice sheets,
corresponding to the end of the Last Glaciation in Britain and that
of the Wisconsin Ice Age in North America, the mysterious period of
the Mesolithic.
On the spot a village then followed in prehistoric times, probably
on the bottom of the valley and on terraces of the sloping
Sonnenburger Weinleite, south of the River Rienz.
In historical time Sebatum, as it was called in Roman times, was
subject to the Municipium Claudium Aguntum, located in what is
today East Tyrol, but certainly maintained its function of capital
village of the Pustertal.
