CCGC Koffee and Kayak on Elkhorn Slough Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Touchstone: As was said earlier, a large part of the credit for this Event idea goes to Sarge and the Cruz Cammandos, who suggested this little run down the slough over on thegba.net forums. So on the one hand, I did feel kind of bad hijacking his idea and making it into an Event, but on the other hand we did get to meet some new friends and have a great time with a humongous flotilla of kayaks out there [:D].

Besides, this will really help the Sarges "Fizzy"-Stats which only takes "Finds" into account:

I believe that the Sarge was the last one that needed to log this one, so I'm going to go ahead and Archive it so I can get it off my closest to home pages [;)]. Thanks again to everyone. You guys are the greatest.

Geocache Description:

Come join the CCGC for coffee/breakfast and feel free to join our group for a kayak trip down the Elkhorn Slough. If you don't have a kayak, there are couple of rental places in Moss Landing that can rent you one, along with a bit of training on how to stay upright. A moderate amount of physical fitness is required to paddle the five to six miles from the meeting place (Kirby Park) down to Moss Landing. Along the way you'll see an amazing variety of sea life and birds.

***Update: Since this Event had to be rescheduled, I will also be at the breakfast spot on Friday, 12/30. The weather sounds too rough for kayaking, so this will be breakfast only on Friday. Due to circumstances beyond our control(the weather forecast), we've changed the date of this Event to December 29 (Thursday). Sorry for the inconveniance, but I think this will make it safer and more enjoyable for everyone.***

When: December 29, 2005 at about 9:00 a.m. or so for breakfast.  You're welcome to join us just for breakfast if that's all you have time for, but I strongly urge you to consider doing the kayak part of the trip.   It is an unforgettable journey down the slough.  We will also meet at 10:00 a.m. at Kayak Connection and about 10:30 at Kirby Park.  High tide is at 9:15 a.m. or there abouts, and we hope to ride the tide down the slough to Moss Landing.  Please allow for several hours in your schedule for this Event.

Where:

Breakfast: Lighthouse Harbor Grill

I'll be there at about 9:00 a.m. or so and your welcome to join us for breakfast if that's all you have time for.  The coordinates for the cache is where the restaurant is located.

Kayak Connection(N36 48.831 W121 47.193):   I'll be there at about 10:00 a.m.  If you need to rent a kayak, this is probably the best option.  They offer a shuttle, and if we fill up the shuttle van (9 available seats when I checked on 12/17), we can shuttle people up in our own cars.  They have lots of room to get kayaks on the trailer but van seating is limited.

Kirby Park (N36 50.415 W121 44.594): This will be the starting point for the kayak trip down the slough.  It's about five to six miles down to Moss Landing and with the way the tide is running, it could take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the amount of exploring we do.  If you have your own boat, you're welcome to meet us at the launching area at about 10:30 or so

Kayak Connection: Offering both single and double kayaks, as well as a shuttle service to Kirby Park.  Shuttle service is also available for the folks that own their own boats, but advanced reservations are required to assure adequate seating on the van and room on the trailer.  Phone: 831-724-5692

Monterey Bay Kayaks: Located right next door to KC, offering similar boats, but last time I checked they didn't have a shuttle service to Kirby. Phone: (800) 649-5357.
