Primarily on looping paved paths, this puzzle cache provides beautiful views (natural and man-made) and a Bit o’ History. Posted coords are to the main entrance of Cimetiere du Precieux Sang. Side gates are on Diamond Hill Rd and Rathburn St. Please visit during daylight hours and remember to CAREFULLY replace the cache as you found it to avoid detection.
Morceau d'histoire
During the 1800's one third of Quebec's population left Canada for mill villages in New England. By 1900, 60% of Woonsocket's population was French-Canadian and Woonsocket was the most French city in the United States. Quebec’s motto,
Je me souviens means “I remember”.
This cache was placed to remember the artists who create beautiful memorials and those for whom the memorials were envisioned.
Ancient Greece? Rome? Woonsocket???
This mausoleum was built for Aram J. Pothier. Born in Quebec, Pothier joined his family in Woonsocket at age 18. He worked his way up in the banking business and in 1889, attended the Paris Trade Exhibition as RI’s delegate. Pothier wooed European financiers to further Woonsocket’s industrial growth and is credited with bringing $6M in foreign investment to the city. In 1893, Pothier was elected Mayor of Woonsocket - the first French Canadian. Elected Governor of RI in 1908, he served 7 terms.
While exploring, I encountered the caretaker, Angelo, who led me to the first memorial shown in the puzzle. "The Little Rose" was deeply religious from a very young age, and afflicted with polio, Rose bore the stigmata (spontaneous wounds on hands and forehead, like those of Jesus on the cross) during her long illness. It was claimed that she had the ability to take on the pain of others, and in the later part of her life many people traveled to her bedside to be healed. The process to have her declared a saint has been initiated.
