WP1 is on a publicly accessible portion of the Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach. Although the cache is open 24/7, please remember this site is part of an active military base. In the past, late night cachers have been paid an inquiring visit from the ever protective and watchful base SP's. WP2 is in a nearby park.
WALK SOFTLY STRANGER, WALK SOFTLY
YOU TREAD ON HALLOWED GROUND
Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach is the West Coast site for America’s World War II Submarine Memorial. Dedicated in 1977, this shrine pays tribute to the 3,505 submariners who never returned from the War. The memorial includes plaques for each of the 52 U.S. submarines lost in that conflict, as well as additional plaques representing submarines lost in accidents during the Cold War. Comprising less than 2% of America's naval resources, submarines destroyed over 55% of all Japanese shipping. But they paid a heavy price. Of the 12,000 sailors serving in submarines during the war, one in four did not survive.
Please take a few moments to reflect on their sacrifice during your visit to the site.
Each Memorial Day a "Tolling of the Boats" ceremony is held at 1100 hours to remember those submariners still on "Eternal Patrol."
----------------------------
You are embarking on a two-waypoint cache. At the first waypoint you are looking for the three digit “SS” hull numbers of the first and last United States submarines lost in action during World War II.
Hull number of the first submarine lost, plus 209 = AAA
Hull number of the last submarine lost, plus 15 = BBB
Next, on the far northwest corner of the memorial stand two lone plaques.
Hull number of the left plaque plus AAA = XXX.
Hull number of the right plaque plus BBB = YYY.
Waypoint 2 is located in a nearby park at N33 44.XXX W118 05.YYY. At WP 2 your task is to locate and raise the sunken "SS GeoCache".
The park is open dawn to dusk. For a nice 6/10 of a mile nature walk to WP 2 you can drive across the street, park in the public parking area to the left of the gated community and walk in. For a quick 6 foot park and grab, look for the park's main parking lot.
