Geocache Description:

Imagine yourself in the Middle Ages as you follow the ancient route to the castle of Beaufort through the lush beech-dominated forest of Albuerg.

Beaufort Castle, locally known as Château de Beaufort, was built in the 9th century on the site of a Roman fort. Originally is was a simple stronghold for the knights and soldiers patrolling the wooded valleys to protect the large estates of the abbey of Echternach. Around 1150 the stronghold was rebuilt to an impressive castle with watchtowers and a moat covered by a drawbridge. In 1380 the castle expanded with new buildings that covered the precious well.

In 1646 the Lord of Beaufort, Johann Baron von Beck, started building a new Renaissance type château next to the original castle. The old castle was abandoned and gradually fell into ruins.

Start in view of the castle at N 49° 50.185’ E 006° 17.140’. Follow the Ritterpad (Knight’s Trail) to the cachesite and from there to N 49° 50.535’ E 006° 16.260’ for a nice roundtrip along the Haupeschbaach.

Happy hunting!
