Geocache Description:

A nice, kid-friendly, easy-ish, lunch-hour, NANO-OFFSET-WEBCAM combo cache involving 5 questions. Take a moment to both learn about, and enjoy this local State College centennial monument. Beside finding the hidden nano, you can OPTIONALLY questions and optionally capture a webcam photo (which often requires a collaborator with computer and Internet access!) Metered parking is available on the street and elsewhere in the vicinity.

A PIGture Perfect Cache

This is NO ORDINARY cache-n-dash nano-cache. This cache includes some questions and a fun WEBCAM. If you have never logged a webcam cache then this will be something new and fun to try (webcam caches are an extinct geocache variety--see www.waymarking.com where they will likely continue to grow). Besides learning more about State College, the goal of this cache is to 1) find the offset nano, 2) answer questions on some fine swine and 3) capture a creative webcam image of yourself holding the nano by the pigs and then optionally upload it with your log entry.

This is a good quality, controllable webcam with a great viewing area. You can pan, tilt and zoom this camera online, viewing activity in the area both day and night. So have fun, be creative--zoom in and log more detailed shots at this State College centennial site than most other webcams allow anywhere (click here for a sample picture).

Note: The webcam had been offline for a while but Iit has returned. If the camera is down you may use a cellphone / digital camera photo, but the photo posting requirement to log this cache has been relaxed.

Not-so-boar-ing info
(get it?! get it?!)

On July 7th, 1996, the State College Centennial Pig sculpture was dedicated. The following month, on August 30th, these oinkers were officially christened "Centennia" for the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the Borough of State College (1896-1996), "Ed" for education, the cornerstone of our community, and "Hope," for the future. The immortalized porkers' names were chosen by a committee composed of adults and children from the community.

The the 500 lb. sculpture by an animal-loving, Pennsylvania artist took about 4 months to complete and was based on a 1893 photograph of a pig foraging on East College Avenue. When State College became a borough 3 years later in 1896, one of it's first ordinances was to outlaw "the carefree roaming of pigs." The original photograph of the foraging pig (right) was donated to the Penn State University Libraries by Harriet Atherton Buckhout and is part of the Penn State Room Photographic Archives.

To log this hog, you must find the nano, which I will now make very very evil to find, and then optionally do 3 things:

  1. Email me the correct answers to all 5 questions below (do NOT post answers in log!!)
  2. Optionally (yes this step is optional but it is fun so don't miss out) post an original, creative webcam photo of you and "other white meat". Be sure to include the nano, (Remember that this webcam can be panned and zoomed waaaaaaay in online. Nothing indecent please!).
  3. Discreetly REPLACE THE NANO!--beware of muggles.

The 5 OPTIONAL Pig Questions
(one for each piggy...only one of whom went to market)

  1. Name all 3 of Disney's original little pigs? (Three Little Pigs, 1933)
  2. Napoleon (bad pig), had ____ (good pig) killed in this George Orwell classic (Animal Farm, 1955, 1999)
  3. Wilbur is "____'s Famous Pig" (Charlotte's Web, 1973)
  4. What spartan, but assuring phrase did Mr. Hogget repeatedly voice to Babe? (Babe, 1995)
  5. Which Pennsylvania artist sculpted the non-kosher, centennial bronzed chops featured in this cache? (1996)

Interactive Tavern WebCam
http://www.thetavern.com

Then click on the webcam link (pig image) in the bottom left corner to view the webcam

For a direct link, you can try typing the entire URL (below) as one single line:
http://www.statecollege.com/tavern-cam/

If the above URLs are not working, you might try going to http://www.statecollege.com, and looking for a link to the webcams, specifically the "Tavern webcam". It is usually on the home page in the top left corner. Sometimes you just need to be patient or check back another day.

If you want to have a friend take a webcam photo of you, make sure that the webcam is working before you head out. As with much of the Internet, things go down for short periods of time, so check back. Please remember the photo is an OPTIONAL part of this cache. (Did you remember to discreetly RETURN THE NANO?!)

Happy caching, The Seven G's and nucci6.
