Geocache Description:

The posted co-ords will take you to a parking area at one of the most interesting and beautiful places in New Brunswick.

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS CACHE CAREFULLY BEFORE LOGGING A "FIND" AS YOU NEED TO MAKE TWO VISITS HERE, APPROX 6 HOURS APART. ONCE YOU HAVE SENT YOUR CALCULATIONS TO THE CO YOU MAY LOG YOUR FIND WITH THE REQUIRED THREE PHOTOS. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE THIS CACHE IN ONE DAY, AS LONG AS THE REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGH AND LOW TIDE ARE MET .

The enormous tides of the Bay of Fundy are truly one of the world's great natural wonders. The Bay is listed as one of the "7 Forgotten Natural Wonders of the World" and in 2011 it was a finalist as one of the "New 7 Wonders of Nature". As a whole it is an UNESCO World Biosphere which contains 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is home to North America’s first ever UNESCO Geopark, "Stonehammer". One hundred billion tons of water flows into and out of the Bay on an average tide, twice a day, creating rip-currents, seething up-wellings, swirling whirlpools and a tidal range reaching 53 ft at the head of the Bay. Each tide is the equivalent of all the world’s rivers emptying in a 24 hour period. The immense energy of the tides powers a highly productive, rich and diverse natural ecosystem, in turn shaping the environment, the economy and the culture of the Fundy region. Along the interior Fundy coast, the phenomenal tides have left conspicuous evidence of their power and might. At St. Martin's, the endless tidal action has carved out spelunker perfect sea caves. At high tide the caves are barely visible while low tide provides the visitor with the opportunity to explore not only the caves but the surrounding sea floor as well.

To claim this cache you will need to take THREE (3) photographs (see photos below) and TWO (2) waypoints.

#1 – In the vicinity of the restaurant's deck take a photo of the caves at high tide FROM THE HIGH TIDE MARK/WATERS EDGE. Waypoint this spot. (A)

#2 - AT THE SAME WAYPOINT take a photo of the caves at low tide.

#3 – Take a photo of the caves at low tide FROM THE WATERS EDGE and waypoint the spot. (B)

#4 - Calculate the difference in feet or metres between A & B.  This will be (C),  the difference between high and low tide.

#5 - Then, EMAIL me the co-ords that you recorded (A & B) along with your callculations for (C). DON'T tell me that the co-ords are embedded in your photo; the info doesn't show up so you still need to email the info! All 3 required photos MUST be posted at the time you post your 'find' and your gps must be in ALL THREE PHOTOS. If you are alone the standard gps in your outstretched hand is perfectly acceptable. If you hit low tide first, pick a spot at the high tide mark for your photo, waypoint it then come back at high tide. *************************************************************************

Note: There is 6 hours between tides. Check tide charts (visit link) or at the VIC for times on your day in the area. At low tide you are able to walk around the outer point by the caves to the next cove (see photo #3) so if the water isn’t out that far it is NOT low tide. This cache requires some planning ahead!

IF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS CACHE ARE NOT MET YOUR LOG WILL BE DELTETED.

This earthcache is all about the mighty Bay of Fundy tides but the geology of the area is equally interesting and contributes to the area’s inclusion in the ‘Stonehammer’ Geopark. TeamBikeFast has created an earthcache that deals with the geology at the caves and can be completed in one visit.
